Hi all I am new to genealogy and I am trying to trace my grandparents Samuel James Thornburrow born approx 1881 and Ivy Annie Hockley born 22-06-1891 possible in Deal Kent. I have been told that Ivy Annie's father was a policeman who bought a pub when he left the force. He also remarried following his wife's death and Ethel and Ivy Annie went into service when Ivy Annie was 11. Sam was in the Navy and he married Ivy Annie in Deal after WW1. I cant find any trace in records on line and my source of the information gets a bit muddled. If anyone is going to Deal I would be really grateful if they could look up the parish records so that I can verify or discount this information. I am fairly sure that they lived in Deal and near Gillingham (owned a shop ? grocers) at somepoint in their lives. thanks Dee

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
Ivy was b Chelsea and perhaps a little later than June as her birth was registered in the December quarter
Births December qtr 1891 Ivy Annie Hockley Chelsea 1a 376
This could be Samuels birth as it is the only match I can find on freebmd
James Samuel Thornborrow September qtr 1881 Lewisham (Greater London/Kent) Volume: 1d Page: 1072

thanks for the reply Carole, this confirms my own searches but conflicts with the info from my aunt who is convinced they were born and married in Deal - nice to get confirmation, I am hoping to double check via the Deal Parish records as well.

Hi
Do you know who Ivy's parents were? I can't find a match on the 1901. The only one I can find was only 6 and dad was a postman - not a policeman

This is the Royal Navy service record for Samuel James THORNBARROW (sic) http://www.rootschat.com/links/05ns/
It will cost £3.50 to download online and will give details of his service but probably no further biographical information.

Hi
Auntie is definitely wrong - here's their marriage from freebmd
Marriages June qtr 1919 Ivy A Hockley to Samuel J Thornburrow Lambeth 1d 632
Their first child (a daughter) was born in 1920 in Kent (registration district Medway) but I can't post details in case she is still living
Another daughter was b 1922 Medway and a son in 1923 in Lambeth

Welcome to RootsChat
This might, just possibly, be a clue to connecting, to Deal, a Hockley who was a policeman. I'll post it anyway, & let you decide
Thomas Albert HOCKLEY, son of Sgt Hockley, died age 10, & was buried in the Hamilton Rd Cemetary, Deal 19th Feb 1929. Address: 9 Park Ave.

The death of this young lad appears to be registered as Albert T HOCKLEY and there is an Albert Thomas HOCKLEY birth registered in the Eastry registration district September quarter 1918 - maiden name of mother = BUSHELL
There is a marriage Albert E HOCKLEY to Florence E BUSHELL 1913 Dover RD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com - can't confirm anything with this though
However, there is a Thomas A HOCKLEY in Deal 1911 census (age 54) whose occupation is something to do with police so I wonder if he could be this one http://www.1911census.co.uk/
1901 - 26 Lucas St, Chelsea, London
Thomas HOCKLEY head mar 44 police sgt b.Hatfield Peveral Essex Eleaner wife 45 b.Cargreen? Laudulf? Cornwall Alice E dau 19 b.Chiswick Albert son 18 b.Chiswick Sidney son 16 b.Chiswick May A dau 9 b.Chiswick Amy E ALBAN visitor mar 31 monthly nurse b.(chelsea crossed out) Westminster
RG13/79 folio 38 page 68 ...................
1891 - 7 Montague Street, Chelsea, London
Thomas HOCKLEY head mar 34 police sgt b.Hatfield Peverall Ellen wife 35 b.Cornwall Ethel dau 9 b.Chiswick Albert son 8 b.Chiswick Sydney son 6 b.Chiswick
RG12/65 folio 41 page 76
A check on the 1911 census index shows that the Thomas A HOCKLEY in Deal was born Hatfield Essex so it could be the right family - I wonder if the May A in 1901 should actually be Ivy A
It does look as though you are going to have to purchase the marriage certificate of Ivy Annie HOCKLEY to proceed any further with any certainty.
