Hiram Oates b1825 Halifax.
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 21:02 BST (UK) »

Hi

This was my great x 2 grandfather. He was born in [b]Halifax, Yorkshire  in 1825, baptised Jan 1st  1826 at St Johns, Halifax, parents Joseph and Martha. Joseph was an architect or surveyor according to various documents  but I think the parents both died before the 1841 census and the children :-
George b 1816, Ann b1819, Samuel b1822, Hiram b 1825, Mary Jane b 1827, Fanny b 1831, Richard b1831 and Olive b 1834 (IGI) were "dispersed". The younger girls maybe to boarding school.
I cannot find Hiram in the 1841 census and am doubtful about any of the other brothers although I have found George in Hull in 1851. I have Hirams marriage certificate to Annie Henrietta Ellerker for 30.12.1848 at Holy Trinity in Hull and have found them both  in all the other censuses until he died in the Asylum in Cottingham 13.02.1887.  Please can anyone help. I suspect there may well be transcription errors as I have my father as a Gates in his WW2 medals, and Hiram as Iram in the Free BMD deaths, but I have run out of ideas.

Yours hopefully

Jane

... and Olive here - I suspect that you have this info because you refer to the girls in boarding school?

HI Jane

There is a death as seen on FMP site for a Richard Oates in 1836 St Johns Halifax for a 5year old boy which would fit with your known info and woudl explain at least his absence in the 1841.

Just to say thanks to all that have contributed already. I will try to chase some of these ideas up over the weekend. I have had my suspicians about the girls and am glad to see others have similar thoughts. I suspect  Olive might have married into the Broomheads as there is a Hiram Broomhead Oates on later censuses but as yet have not found the connection. It sems  strange that the boys are so difficult to find though. I am not aware of any 1841 census problems in that region. Might any be missing I wonder. Hiram is likely to have been an apprentice builder/bricklayer/plaster I suspect but where?

I've done all sorts of searches and can't see him at all.

There is a Hiram Broomhead Oates born 1881 and dies 1884 in Halifax so he wouldn't be Olive's - who wouldn't be Oates on her marriage-would she?  Wink

Hi Heywood

This is true of course. Sorry it has been a long week. Maybe it is one of the other brothers then. I will take that further. Good point, thanks
