Hello Christine,
What denomination were John and Sarah Ann? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or members of the Presbyterian Church?
You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

One of he first places you should look is LDS site (www.familysearch.org). Three sons listed on IGI: Michael born 12 July 1869 Co.Armagh John born 12 Sept.1871 Co.Armagh Joseph born 9 Aug.1880 Derrytrasna dist., Co.Armagh
Michael should also be listed in 1891 and 1901 census in Scotland.

Christopher, aghadowey,aljepeka and Mary,
Many Thanks for you're interest, and for taking the time to do some research on my behalf. It has been quite a while since I looked at my Hamill's. I had to give them a rest as I was beginning to fear for my sanity. I have been trying to piece together my Hamill's since 1982 and don't have much more than you have been able to find.
The entries for the 4 sons have been on family search for a number of years now. Since making my original post I have been in touch with a grandson of Joseph, who now lives in Canada. Unfortunately he didn't have any more information than I did.
The entry for a daughter, Ann is interesting. My Gt Grandfather didn't die until 1951. Though this was a few years before I was born, my father and his siblings grew up with a lot of contact with him. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have been an inquisitive bunch! You would have thought that at least one out of 10 would have been a bit nosy. Especially as 7 were girls. Anyway, I have been told by an aunt that there were 8 sons. Apparently they were all boxers! No mention of any daughters.
Mary,
Many, Many Thanks. Unless James Hamill and Sally Ann Lavery were common names, and they had a habit of marrying each other, then this must be them. You have taken me a step forward, which I haven't been able to do since I obtained Michael's marriage certificate over 25 years ago.
Many Thanks to you all.
Christine.
