hi can anyone help please i am trying to trace my tree from my dads side but i am having trouble getting beyond my dads name is richard harrison born 1909 west derby liverpool his dads name is william john he was married twice i do not the name of his first wife his second wife is cathrine tartt

I presume you have Richards parents from his birth certificate.  Have you any idea when William and Catherine married?

Hi Moaler

Sorry, from your first post I thought you said that Richard was your father and that his father was William John whose second wife was Catherine.

So we are really looking for William John Harrison with a son Richard who was born in 1909, West Derby. 

Have you found your father Richard on the 1911 census or do you have his birth certificate.  The 1911 should at least give a bit more information on his father William Johns age and place of birth.

There is one marriage for a William John Harrison in West Derby searched between 1890 and 1910

There are two possible spouses:  Clara Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Sevden.

If you enter William John Harrison  (no date of birth) in the 1911, residence West Derby and other names Mary Elizabeth Harrison  -  you get a match.

If you then change William John Harrison to Richard Harrison b. 1909 and leave the Mary Elizabeth  -   match   Cheesy

Hannah  -  mother in law  -  is also there in 1911  -  surname Sevden.
But it is definitely Bevden on the 1901  Roll Eyes

The marriage Q2. 1892 West Derby has Mary Elizabeth Sevden   Undecided

But - I can't find a birth registration for Mary Elizabeth Sevden  Sad

I found a marriage in 1868 between Francis Sevden and Hannah Flowers in West Derby.

There are two births registered 1870 and 1874 for Joseph Sevden and Thomas Henry Sevdon, in West Derby

There is a death registered for Hannah Sevden age 78 West Derby Q2. 1919.

With the big gap between Ellen and William J,  I wondered whether Mary Jane was Richard's second wife  Smiley

In 1871 Richard is indeed a widower, with children Thomas 16, Elizabeth 11, Richard 8 and Ellen 4.

The only marriage I could find for a Richard Harrison to a Mary between 1871 and 1875 was Q3. 1873 West Derby, with 2 Mary's on the page  Undecided

Then found a marriage in 1868 between Mary Jane Gardiner (father William Gardiner there in 1881) and John Mickel;  one of the Mary's in the 1873 marriage is Mary Mickel   Cheesy    There are also birth registrations for Catherine and Margaret Mickel in Liverpool in 1864 and 1865.

So  -  it seems William John's parents were Richard Harrison and Mary Jane Gardiner  Smiley    And Catherine and Margaret were his half sisters   Smiley

Just to complete the picture:

Richard's first marriage  :  Q4. 1853 Liverpool to Rosanna McCluskey

She is Rose A on the 1861 census, and there is a Susan McCluskey age 62 Wid. in the household

Rose A  Harrison died aged 39 in West Derby Q4. 1870.


John Mickel died age 47 in West Derby Q2. 1873

(the quarter before Mary married Richard   Shocked  )
