War Office Records Lost in 1940 Fire

I've recently transcribed an inventory of the records lost in the fire of September 1940.

While the best known loss is most of the service records for men who served in WW1, there are many other items lost ranging from the West Indian Regiment in 1790 up to the BEF in France in 1939/40.

There are a lot of abbreviations and acronyms which I don't understand so if anyone can explain them, I'll add them to the list to make it easier to read.

Any help appreciated as this could be/is a useful reference.

This shows the value of computerised reords, provided they are allbacked up many times over and stored at widely scattered ;ocations.

Fair point Linda, I believe dispersal and duplication to be the answer to preservation of records, but with hard copies there is always the problem of updatings causing one source to become different to others!
