I am searching for information about the family of Charles James Powell (gentleman/brewer) and wife Anne (nee Morgan) who resided in Myrthyr Tydfil or close by in Dowlais, and were included in the 1841 Census.
Their marriage took place 2or3?/7/1833 in Llanwenarth, Monmouthshire. (There Marriage Licence was indexed and mentions that Anne is a minor, so under 21. It's in marriage bonds Llandaff A 129/126 and the index is (WlAbNL) 004420307. (Yes I have this information, however I thought it might help in the identification of the real Anne Powell (nee Morgan).
Their children were: Charles b.@"Goitra" 13/8/1834 bp. 11/9/1834 at Merthyr Tydfil.
Anne Olive Powell bp. Parish Ch. of St. Tydfils in 30/6/1837 deceased 27/9/1837(GRO Ref:Vol.26 Page 241)
William Bassett Powell bp.4/1/1836 Merthyr Tydfil
Lucy Miranda Powell bp.13/11/1839 (GRO ref. Vol 26 Page 371 Dowlais (died? Jun.Qtr.1840 - GRO Ref. Vol 26 page 325)
Walter John bp. 18/3/1841 GRO ref Vol 26 page 436 Dowlais (but possibly marked as Merthyr Tydfil)
I am also searching for the siblings of Charles James Powell -
William Walter J. Powell baptised 7/7/1801 Abergavenny, Mons.
Irene &/or Olive Mary Powell 1805 bp. 3/1/1805 Abergavenny
Osborne Baker Powell bp. 26/6/1808 Abergavenny, Mons.
Frances Miranda Powell bp. 21/6/1811 Abergavenny, Mons.
Unfortunately there are no birth records as such until Civil Registration in July 1837.
However, Charles James Powell can not be located in Myrthyr Tydfil on the 1851 Census.
Birth of Charles James Powell to parents Rev. William Powell & wife Olive Mary, 3/10/1806, bp. 24?/10/1806 Abergavenny, Mons
Death of Charles James Powell in Neath, GRO Vol 26 page 335 ?? Is it him?
Anne Powell (nee Morgan) there are so many Anne Powell's who died between 1844 and 1888 (11a/246) I don't know if I can pick the right one.
Would it please be possible for someone to check the original Parish Records of St. Tydfils, Myrthyr Tydfil in the Central Library or wherever you can in the UK.
Hoping someone can assist me in trying to trace these very illusive ancestors.
Thanking you in anticipation, Eddo

I apologise to all those who have been helping me find these ancestors. I was overwhelmed with what you found, and have been trying to fit everyone in to the right slot on the old family tree. I have made contact with a distant relation as well, and between what they have found, what you have found, and the little I have been able to find, it has really been "awesome" (that's the only word I can think of at present). Thanks to the help I have received on line, I am finally getting the family ancestry into line, and it's a bigger family line than I thought it would be. I didn't realise how many young children were lost in their early days of life, or at times, why families moved so suddenly - the outbreak of disease, etc. Again thank you all for your assistance - the Powells are finally "making sense" to me. Eddo

glad to be of help. Too many Ann Powell deaths registered to identify yours.
There's some family info on the online index of the Cambrian newspaper http://www2.swansea.gov.uk/_info/cambrian/default.asp
death of Rev William in 1863 marriage of Charles in 1833, birth of first son & daughter, a possible different death date for Charles in 1843 if he was a J.P. registered as Charles Powell dec qtr 1843 Brecknock vol 26 pg 200
I'll check later for the marriage licence and a will for Charles James. I'm waiting for a password to be reset.

Thanks Osprey, Now that I'm starting to get my head around who goes where on this tree, it seems to get a little easier. However, finding the information isn't quite so easy. I'm trying to get as much done as I can before the end of July, because one of my daughters is heading to the UK, and I'm going to put together a list of people/places for her to find where she can get direct access to records - be that London or Cardiff. She may also have to go off the beaten track a bit, but I'm trying to avoid that, because after all it is her holiday. (I thought that's what kid's were for). Again, thanks for all your help, it's really making things easier. Eddo

Hello all
There have been a couple of comments about moving this thread.
I deliberately left it, as the title suggested Glamorgan and the developments were indicating Monmouthshire.
I think it might sit best on the Monmouthshire board on the whole...
I'll delete the Breconshire from the title because that is one that doesn't seem to be involved yet!
Kind regards, Arranroots

had a look for a will for Charles James, but with no success. His marriage licence is indexed and mentions that Ann is a minor, so under 21. It's in marriage bonds Llandaff A 129/126 and the index is (WlAbNL) 004420307 (I think)Charles James Powell of Abergavenny, bach to Anne Morgan 2/7/1833 in Llanwenarth. Think you should be able to get a copy from the NLW http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=nlwenquiries

Morning Osprey, This was a nice surprise to wake up to. I haven't been able to find much about Anne Olive from this end. Yesterday I spent about 4 hours just trying to get on to the GRO with the websites listed, and my emails kept bouncing back to me. I was all set to order a couple of certificates, but wanted to ask what it was going to cost me beforehand. Needless to say, I still don't know, so it looks like I may have to make a phone call, and hope that it's a quickie. Thus far I think I have enough information to order:
I.G.I. Batch No. C056891 4) Lucy Miranda Powell -Christened 25 Sept 1850 Dowlais, Glamorgan 15) Walter John Powell - Christened 13 Mar 1841, Dowlais, Glamorgan
I.G.I. Batch No. C057191 7) Charles Powell - Birth 13/8/1834 Chris.11/9/1834 Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. 24) Ann Olive Powell - Birth 30/6/1837 Chris. 27/9/1837 Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan 47) William Bassett Powell - Birth. ? Christened 4/1/1836 Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
I will also probably order a Marriage document for Charles James & Anne Davies, and now Ann Olive's one as well.
I need to have as much information (documentally ?) as possible, so that I can order ahead, and maybe just get my daughter to pick up, or they can post them Air Mail.
I don't want her to waste her holiday chasing paperwork for me.
But she's going into the Merthyr Tydfil area, mainly the Brecons for a bit of "walking", so I'd really like her to visit the town, to find out just where we all came from and take some photos. That seems to be the most important little town to the Powells and their beginnings, and what shaped them for the trek to Australia, and starting all over.
Anyway, thanks again for all your help. I'm really enjoying having a chat.
Sorry, I'm a bit tired this morning, because I stayed up to watch the Tour de France again last night, and as usual fell asleep in my chair just as they crossed the finish line, so I still don't know who officially leads the race. Will find out on the news today I suppose.
Bye for now Eddo
