Not sure that Milligan or Finnigan in Ireland are going to be much easier than Smith in England

Best of luck with that!

Linda

Hehe, thanks! I know, trust me to have such common surnames on both sides of the Irish Sea!

Actually, would it be okay to ask a question here? It's just about reading Scottish Death Certificates, in reference to the Mother and Father section (5).

When it comes to the mother, what does it mean when it says something like "Mary Smith, previously Jones, M.S [sic] Anderson" (these aren't the real names, by the way - just an example). Is this a reference to a previous marriage?

Thanks in advance!

Hi IDS

On a Scottish  death certificate  ms = maiden surname, so it's giving you their mother's maiden name.  Scottish BM and D certs are very informative.

Thanks for the quick reply Smiley! Much appreciated. I've found, however, that most of the other Mothers' details on other Death Certs say something like "Mary Smith, M.S. Anderson" for example, but this one I've come across has a third name in between saying "Previously Jones" which I don't quite know how that fits in between the married name and the maiden name. I was just wondering if the "Previously Jones" part was some reference to a previous marriage before the Smith one?

Could well be!   I had a huge problem finding my great grandmother's death certificate, as I was looking in her married name, and MS (maiden surname)   She had married again, which I hadn't known.  When I finally tracked her down, all 3 names appeared on the death certificate but only her original birth surname showed as MS

Hi IDS

Sorry I didn't read your post properly, (too keen to try and be helpful), to me it does look like there has been a previous marriage.  What I said about Scottish certs still stands though - they are a mine of information Cheesy,

Maggie1895 - I can imagine it must have been a great feeling to get past what must have seemed at the time a dead end! I think the "Previously Jones" must have been a previous marriage in my case - there doesn't seem to be any other obvious explanation.

purplekat - No need to apologise - I appreciate your eagerness to help! Yeah, I think it looks like a previous marriage to me too. I agree about the certs as well - they've been a Godsend and given me so much information so far. It's almost too easy, although I think I'm reaching the hard part now, as you'll see below. Thanks again for your reply!

In the meantime I think I may have had some progress in terms of my surname change. Although my Great Grandpa died a Smith, I think he was born illegitimate to a lady called Milligan. This ties in with the scraps of stories I've heard over the years. I guess somewhere along the line he was adopted by some Smiths. I guess it's now down to finding and confirming this adoption happened! Any suggestions are welcome!
