Hello from a new person
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 21:15 UTC (UK) »

Just thought I'd get the ball rolling and introduce myself. So hello there! I actually joined a while ago, but this is me only getting round to my first post.

I've only really started looking into my family history in the past year or so, and even then it's only been on and off whenever I get the chance. I'm from Scotland but I'm trying to trace a possible line to Ireland on both parents' sides, and there may even be a surname change somewhere along the line - although exciting I also worry this might lead me to a dead end! We'll see how it pans out.

Anyway, hope to get to speak to you folks a lot more in the coming months!

IDS, I'm pretty new but can I say that every time I've asked a question I've been stunned by the speed and knowledge of the response - and how helpful everyone is.
Lord knows how long it will be before I get skilled enough to answer instead of ask!
Good luck, I'm sure you'll find it as helpful as I do

Welcome to RootsChat.

I've been doing family history on and off for years (even before the Internet - yes I'm that old!)  but I've only been on RootsChat a week or so.  Already I've found out how incredibly friendly and helpful people are, so I hope we can do the same for you.

Wow, thanks for all the lovely replies folks! You've given me such a nice welcome. Also thanks for your offers of help. I'll no doubt start asking my questions very soon Smiley

Oh, and in reply to Gillg in particular: if the IDS you speak of is Iain Duncan Smith, then sorry to disappoint you but I'm not him Grin (or maybe you're not disappointed and you're, in fact, quite relieved!) I am, sadly, a Smith though, which I've found isn't much help when it comes to researching Family History!

Cheers guys!

Thanks! I know, it doesn't make it easy having such a common surname to deal with, does it? One of the reasons I'm doing my research is because there's been a family rumour that the name Smith wasn't actually our original family name, and instead we took on the name Smith from something Irish (Milligan or Finnigan are the names that keep cropping up) when we came over from Ireland. Well, that's the rumour anyway!

Not sure that Milligan or Finnigan in Ireland are going to be much easier than Smith in England

Best of luck with that!

Everyone seems to have a Smith tucked away in his tree...

maybe we should start an Assorted Smiths Society  with all our loose Smiths enrolled Roll Eyes
