Hi Peter
Can you tell me the name of the newspaper that reported the sinking of the 'Tredegar' and inquest? Is it also possible for me to get a copy?  Also do you know where John Syner was buried?
If my niece is able to purchase these on her journey I liaise with her.

They are available online if you are a member of any Libraries West library. I'll look up the dates for you tonight but I'm sure it was the Bristol Mercury. Apparently Weston (super Mare) library has the Clevedon Mercury which may (or may not) have a different version. The RNLI also have some details on the rescue of one of the crew. I also have a picture of "the Moderator" his previous ship somewhere.

More later....

The inquest was at St. Peter's Hospital which sounds grand but was the infirmary of the workhouse. The building was a fine timber framed building which burnt down in the air raids. I would presume he would have been buried in the grounds but there is nothing left nowadays. The open space is just called Castle Green and the burnt-out church has been left as a memorial.

John also appeared at an inquest in 1852 of a fellow seaman who drowned at Bristol. It was the same coroner who was to do his. If you PM me your e-mail address I can forward the cuttings to you.

I also have a piece fro the Newport Argos of Sarah Ann Norval daughter of John 1813 makes interesting reading.
We visited the chuches of Newland ,Hewelsfield and Brockweir many years ago and took some photo's it is such a lovely part of the country.

About a quarter of the book has been eaten away - it's quite something!
