William and Mary Stewart - Abbey 1850's
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 21:44 UTC (UK) »

My great, great grandfather, William Stewart was born 1851.
He was a hammerman.   He lived at 16 Collier Street, Johnstone.  His father's name was also William Stewart, and he was a Flax-desser.  His mother was Mary Stewart, (born Mary S. Dunlop).

My great great grandfather married Jane Love on December 31, 1873 at St. John's Church, Abbey (Landward).  She was born in 1854 at Victoria Road Barn Row, Nitshill, Renfrewshire.    She was a cotton-mill worker.  She lived at Nitshill, Abbey (Landward).  Her father was Edward Love and he was a coal miner.  Her mother was Mary Ann Love (born Mary Ann S. Walker).  She had 3 younger brothers, Edward, Thomas, and John and two younger sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret.  I need help  finding more on William Stewart .  I am coming to Johnstone this week.

I am coming up to Johnstone and Paisley the week of July 5.

No, I didn't have that one.  Thank you very much.

Do you know if St. John's Church, Abbey, (Landward) is still there?  I cannot find it.

Hi Ev,

Thank you so much.  I did not have that.  Where did he live at that time?  I only have his marriage certificate.  I do not have anything else.  Everything I know comes from his marriage certificate.

I will look up this census in England at the Lancashire record center.  I thought he lived in Scotland?  I tried to find it in Scotland, but was not successful.  Did it show he had any children?

Thanks so much for your help.

Ev,
I cannot thank you enough!  This is my great grandfather, William Stewart, born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England in 1880!  He was a missing link.  I do not know when he came to America, but he married Mary Kilty and they are the mother and father of my grandfather, (another William Stewart) who was born in 1901 in Brooklyn.

Thank you so much!

Now, I will try to go backwards to see who his parents were in Ireland, and where in Ireland he was born.  And I will try to find out more about when he came to America.

Thank you so much!

Dear Seekthem,

Thank you for the information on St. Johns Church in Johnstone.

Since then. have been told the following from Murphyz: This church was St. John's Church in Barrhead, and was destroyed in 1941.  A new church has been built there in 1961.

http://www.stjohns-barrhead.org/history/index.html

Thanks for your help.

William and Mary Stewart - Abbey 1850's
« Reply #9 on: Sunday 05 July 09 22:41 UTC (UK) »

Mary (Dunlop) and William Stewart married in 1848 in Belfast.  They moved to Abbey sometime before 1857 when Thomas was born in Abbey on 4/24/1857.  Were there any other children? previously or after?

Is it possible to get census information in Scotland?  Or is it parish information? I would assume the parish was St. John's RC Church, which no longer exists.
Were they still there in Scotland in 1860-61 census?  And 1870-71 census.  I am assuming they were because their son, William, the son born in 1852 in Ireland, got married in 1873 in Abbey and at that time he lived at 16 Collier Street, Johnstone.

Any help that you can give me to find out this information would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi,

If you are going to be in the area for a few days, suggest you go to the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.  They have reduced-price cards for Scotland's People where you can search BMD & census by surname, and view the relevant pages (some date restrictions in the BMDs).  Otherwise, you could troll through the films at either Paisley library or Watt Library in Greenock.

There is a museum in Johnstone (sorry, don't know where it is) which might be able to give you some local information, particularly on the linen manufacturing side.  Collier Street would have been a few minutes walk from one of the linen mills which is now a Morrison's supermarket at the west end of Johnstone.

Good luck!

Barrhead came under the parish of Neilston so this might not have been your
St Johns Church in Barrhead whitch no longer exists   Johnstone and Elderslie came under the parish of Abbey and the church is still there.  There is a very small museum within Morrisons Supermarket with pictures of Johnstone but you will not
get any family records there.
The parish no. for Abbey is 559 and 573 for Neilston.  What is the information on
the marriage certificate you have.
On the IGI there is an Edward Stewart born 25 Dec 1874 Abbey parents William
Stewart Jane Love

William Stewart (born in Belfast Ireland in 1852) married Jane Love (born in Nitshill, Abbey, Scotland in 1854)  on 12/31/1873 at St. John's Church, Abbey (Landward) by Thomas Carlin R.C.C..  According to St. John the Evangelist Barrhead history of the parish, Thomas Carlin was the priest at the church from 1873 - 1893.

Yes, William and Jane Stewart had 3 children there in Abbey, Edward Stewart born 12/25/1874 and who died in Birkenhead  in 1881;
Rebecca Stewart born 1876 at Abbey, and James E. Stewart born 1879 at Abbey.  They moved to Birkenhead and they had William Stewart born in 1880 in Birkenhead (my great grandfather).

Hi there,

A smal bit of what is now "Barrhead" did come under the Abbey parish.
An extract from the Vision of Britain web site

http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/gaztext_page.jsp;jsessionid=EE97C7B58B823950E6A6E768926339B8?u_id=10050996&c_id=10107260

Abbey, a parish of NE Renfrewshire, including part of the town of Paisley while completely surrounding the burgh parishes, and itself called sometimes Abbey Paisley. It also contains the town of Johnstone, the Dovecothall portion of Barrhead, and the villages of Elderslie, Thorn, Quarrelton, Inkerman, Hurlet, and Nitshill.

I only suggested St John's in what is now Barrhead, as it is the only St John's I think existed in the Nitshill area and you had Mary Dunlop born in Nitshill.

Cheers
Murphyz
