I am researching this very interesting individual who served with both the RAMC and Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders in the Boer War, Somlialand and WW1.  He died in Coomassie in 1921.

He was educated at the RGC in Aberdeen and their archivist has kindly provided the following information:

Pupil no. 3156 Robert J. McKay entered RGC in 1893 and left in June 1898.  His father is given as William McKay, Army Captain (retired) and his address was 124 Leadside Road, Aberdeen.  While already attending the College, he was awarded a Foundation (bursary for the payment of fees) tenable for 2 years from June 1896.  He achieved this by getting 74.1% in the open competition for boys aged over 13 and under 14 on 1st January 1896.

He joined the army in 1900 and served with the RAMC during the Boer War, receiving both the Queem's and King's South Africa medals.  Service in Somaliland followed being rewarded by another campaign medal.  With the outbreak of WW1, he went to France in August 1914 and was present at the retreat from Mons, receiving a mention in dispatches and a Military Cross.

He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders, receiving a DSO for very at High Wood where he was severely wounded.  Unable to return to active duty, he was posted to the Gold Coast Regiment and served with them until his death in 1921.

Is anyone able to check the Aberdeen papers for a mention of him/

Thank you.
