Hello Dorothy
Without turning Alice into International Woman of Mystery, what is it that makes her confusing? - or is it you that's confused? Without giving too much info away what facts do you have for her.
I see that in 1909 there are no Alice Steels born in Scotland, but 1
1909 STEELE ALICE LOWNIE F OLD ABERDEEN ABERDEEN/ABERDEEN
Any chance that this is your lady?
Scotlandwide 1899 to 1910 - there are 7 Alice Steels born. Non in Aberdeen/shire. Have pm'd you the list. Used that timespan in case Alice may have been economical with the truth regarding age. Have sometimes found this with ancestors of both genders, especially when it comes to marriage. However - have never come across anyone lopping off more than 10 years :O)
I'd therefore go and look for a marriage between a male Steele and a female Lownie. Off to do that now.

Back off Scotlands People
Scotlandwide between 1880 and 1915 - only one marriage to a couple with that name
1906 STEELE ANDREW LOWNIE ANNIE COWIESON WOODSIDE ABERDEEN CITY/ABERDEEN 168/03 0019
(Andrew Steele marries Annie Cowieson Lownie in the Woodside district of Aberdeen).
If you can confirm that the above are 'your' family I can get the marriage entry for you then I'm sure others will help take the family back.
Regards, Steve

Hi and thanks Piglet01
Alice Steel was my Aunt ..She revealed absolutely NOTHING of her life to anyone in the family including her daughter .. other than she was born in Scotland in 1909 and came to Canada as a very very young child. The name Lownie does appear as a middle name on a marriage record to my uncle.. no other info about her!
No parents names , no siblings ever mentioned .. We have spent much time investigating the 'Bernardo /Carruthers Children' but to no avail.
She destroyed any and all info. She once said she came from Glasgow .. And that was the only slip in her years ( well over 80) of silence.
You have given me me a whole opening with this birth and marriage. Thanks so much ! Dorothy

Seems a bit of a misunderstanding there Dorothy as you did say thanks - I'm Piglet01/Steve :O)
Just about to say - pleased that we've got the right person. As you're aware, you'll have to wait a year to download your aunts birth entry. You can of course downoad the marriage entry to take the family back. Also you'll be able to easily search for her mothers death as you'll have 2 names to use as a filter.
Unfortunately the next census records won't be available till 2011, which might show older or younger siblings.
I live in Aberdeen - so if I can be of any help?
Regards, Steve

Our Crosbies are from the Galashiels area and also Earlston.
If you pm me your e-mail address - I'll send the cert.
So that lurkers can pitch in I'm posting details of the marriage.
13th July 1906 at 13 Gladstone Place, Woodside "according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland).
Andrew Steele, bachelor, (stone cutter), living at 67 Don Street, Old Aberden, son of Samuel Steele (Tailor Journeman)- deceased, and Marjory Steele (M.S. Laing)
married Annie Cowieson Lownie, spinster (domestic servant|), 13 Gladstone Place, Woodside, dau. of Alexander Lownie (Paper Mill Worker), and Jessie (? either Richardson or Nicholson) - slightly difficult to read.
Witnesses were 2 members of Annies family.
Regards, Steve
Update: Gladstone Place is on 'Google Street' - I'd imagine Don Street is the same. Type in the address. then use the person icon at the left side of the screen - and hey presto you're in the street looking at the house.....

Hello Dorothy. Mmmh.... looks as thought that Alice Lownie Steele born Aberdeen 1909 is not yours.....
Have been doing a bit of searching. Looks as though she married someone in Aberdeen in 1930 and died i Aberdeen in 1972, aged 62.
Shall pm you the details.
Regards, Steve
