Where is this district please
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 23:31 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I have found a birth on SP listed as Glasgow, district of College.  I have googled to try to find where this district is located in Glasgow but without success.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

bye

As far as I'm aware, College was fairly central, in the High St area of Glasgow.
It would be near the site of the original university before it moved to it's current location.
There is an area now called Collegelands which is approximately in the area I'm talking about.  A lot of modern flats there now.
Hope this helps (and that I'm correct).

Thanks Dave

Most of my lot lived around Baillieston area so I am not sure  Huh

I was hoping that this McLeish birth may be mine given the middle name
was Donaldson.

Hi eilidh,

Baillieston was the district of Old Monkland Western - would that help you narrow things down?

Hello Anne,

Hope you are well. Not sure if you remember but you helped me with my grandfather George Donaldson's burial and headstone at St John's Episcopal Church Baillieston.

I have since found several McLeish family members in my tree and whilst searching Scotlandspeople I found a birth in 1938 for a

MCLEISH   JEANIE DONALDSON    F   COLLEGE   GLASGOW/LANARK

Seems a big coincidence the middle name Donaldson, but I was questionning the birth being registered in College Huh  Hence my posting as to where this was in Glasgow.

Did parents have to register bdm in the district it occured?

Many thanks
bye

College was a district for registration and voting purpose's only, no one would have said the lived in College.
What may well have been part of that district was the Glasgow Maternity Hospital, it was situated in Rottenrow and the hospital was generally know as Rottenrow. Also in Rottenrow was the Lock Hospital, for women with venerial disease, it was there up until WWII. (The maternity hospital lasted much longer).
Just an idea.

Don't ask me what I did this morning or yesterday - but ask me who's looking for who and in what graveyard and I can tell you in 2 seconds!! (Well, ones that I frequent!!)

I believe that Dave is correct.

This copied from the Glasgow University history website, and their copyright, -

"For its first nine years, the fledgling university was based at Glasgow Cathedral. In 1460, the University moved to High Street, where, over the next 400 years, it continued to expand both in its scope and size. It was a centre of the both the industrial revolution and the Scottish Enlightenment.

As it grew however, the University was restricted by the encroaching overcrowding and squalor of the city and the expanding factories and railways, fruits of the industrial expansion it had helped to shape. As a result, in 1870, it moved to its current familiar west end location at Gilmorehill, then a greenfield site enclosed by a large loop of the River Kelvin."

The part of High Street involved was south of the junction with George Street, in between there and The Gallowgate, to the East.

College registration district was created in 1935 and disappeared in 1955 !

The maternity hospital in Rottenrow, sadly demolished some years ago, apart from the magnificent portal of the main entrance which has been preserved, was a good half mile or more to the NW of the original Glasgow Yoonie site.

And there was another "university" just next door to the maternity hospital, - Anderson's Institution, founded in 1796, - see http://www.gashe.ac.uk:443/public_docs/isaar/C0798.html , - later the Royal College of Science and Technology, now known as the University of Strathclyde !

Morning All,

Apologies for my late response, just crawled out of bed....tooooo cold..weather man says it is going to be a cold one in Brisbane today 8 - 19C.

Thank you for all your interesting comments, yes it would make sense if there was a maternity home located in College precincts.

Learn a wee bit more each day  Wink

Appreciate all your help, off to make a cup of tea

Ailsa,
(sorry, Eilidh)
Gotta laugh ,
19C, I'd be happy with most of the time.
We had 26C in Glasgow yesterday and that is a wee bit higher than we've had for a while.
Mid summer for us though.
You're cold at 8 - 19C? LOL

Note to self - take wooly jumpers with me next time I visit Oz.

Ah Dave,

The downside is it is very hot and humid in summer, sometimes days and days in the high 30's. I can handle the heat during the day, but when it is still 28C at midnight I am not a "happy chappie"

Thank goodness for airconditioning  Smiley Smiley
