Hi Chris, I have been reading the great work you have done on Lewes records and wonder if you can help me. The information I have at present is: William Hammond, stonemason of Lewes. m. Ann Hood at, I think, Lewes St Michaels in 1747(?). I know of 3 children - William(1757?) Elizabeth (1762?) and Ann (1764?). Elizabeth married John Hargraves and died soon after the birth of her first child. She was buried in her father's vault 19 Mar 1785 which I think would be in St Johns sub castro. This would suggest that William had died by that date. I do not know anything about William or Anne's family so I would be grateful for any information on the Hammond/Hood families as they present a 'brick wall' for me right now. Julia

The IGI has a couple of daughters to a William and Ann HAMMOND baptised at Rodmell, which could tie in with William being from there when he married.

Hi again
Looking in the burial register for the period 1751 - 1799 we find the following
1792 October 26 Hammond Martha f Widow of William 601 1784 January 30 Hammond Thomas m Thomas of St Thomas Cliffe, in a steen grave. 1780 December 28 Hammond William m William, Tanner. Churchwarden when the parish church of St Johns was repaired and beautified. 601
That leads us to a gravestone No 601 which I will now look up

Hi again
Did Ann Hammond die after 1764 as we have a second marriage of William to Martha in 1767 as follows:
Location: Newick, East Sussex, Date: 27 Dec 1767: Groom: William HAMMOND, widower of Lewes Bride: Martha PICKERING, spinster of this parish Married by Licence.
Monument No 601 in the St John Sub Castro Churchyard seems to refer to the above couple
No 601-
Headstone: To the memory of/ Mrs Martha Hammond/ who died Oct the .. 1792/ aged 64 years/ Also of/ Mr William Hammond/ husband of the above/ Martha Hammond/ who died 10th December/ 1780 aged 46/ Footstone: MH 1792; WH 1780.
Hope the above is of use to you

Hi Julia
Going back to your original questions:
Looks as though there is an extra girl named Ann who was born in 1760, but was deceased by 1764 as another child was named Ann bapt Oct 1764 - no entry in the St John Sub Castro burial registers??
Elizabeth Hammond married John Hargreaves in 1783, but again I can not find a burial entry for her in the St John Sub Castro registers. You mention that she was buried in her fathers vault in 1785, but I do not think it is in Sub Castro Churchyard!!
Have checked registers for Sub Castro, All Saints, South Malling and Southover, all parts of Lewes - but unfortunately I have not done any work on St Michaels or St Annes - so cannot check there

hi Janan
Thanks for that extra information from Waldron - it seems to tie in nicely with the info that we have. Really appreciate that.
Unfortunately I do not have any data on that part of Lewes.

You said in your first message
"William Hammond, stonemason of Lewes".
All the references that I have are William was a Tanner and Hargraves was the Stonemason - did you get them mixed up, or do you know something that I dont.

Hi Julia/Chris
Found this burial for Elizabeth in Sussex Burials
Lewes St John Sub Castro 19th March 1785 Elizabeth Hargraves wife of John
Strange she is missing from your database Chris
The Waldron burial for Ann also has William as a Tanner

Attached to this message is the 1799 map of Lewes which quite clearly shows in the top left corner the Tanyard where William would have worked and the OLD St John Sub Castro Church before it was rebuilt in the position it occupies today.
Just helping to put everything into context for you - Map removed

Yes, I quite agree - have just re-checked the database both in 'burial date' order and again in 'surname sorted' order - very strange indeed.
I transcribed that register back in the mid 1990's and I do have the original transcription on floppy disks, so will have to recheck that all the data came over; otherwise will have to admit that I missed that entry.
Thanks for finding it Jan; you are a star whilst I am a fading comet

Jan - sorry you can not see the map, can you see the picture of the gravestone?
