Edwin Smith
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 21:33 UTC (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can help me find out about the death of Edwin Smith. He was my Grandad's Uncle and died in 1944.
I know from the census that he was born in Burgess Hill, Sussex and lived there in 1911 with his brother (my Great-Grandad) and family. After that I am having problems finding him. He was born in 1885 and we know for sure that he died in 1944. There was talk of him being in the Armed Forces although I do not know which one.

Can anyone help me with this in any way please?

Have a look at the CWGC website (War Graves)
As Edwin was 60 odd in 1944, I assume him to have been a civillian.
There was a 73 year old Edwin Smith (a fire watcher) who was killed in Bow, London.

I have had a look at the CWGC website, Roy G.
He is not there. He would have been 59 years old in 1944 when he died. The 73 year old that was a fire watcher is not him as he did not have a middle name.

Where else can I look and find him?

There are two Edwin SMITHs of the right age that I can see who died in 1944, probably the first one.

Edwin SMITH, Mar qtr 1944, Surrey SW, 2a 598, age 59
Edwin SMITH, Dec qtr 1944, Gt Yarmouth, 4b 2, age 59

Taken from Death index 1837-1983

Thanks for that Eyesee!

I shall have a proper look at these as the Edwin Smith that is listed in Surrey could more likely be the one in question. There is a connection, as his brother moved to Surrey.

I will look further into this.  Huh
