Creighton family of Wakefield
« on: Friday 03 July 09 08:28 UTC (UK) »

Hello!
Can anyone help please?
I have finally tracked down the parents of George Creighton born 1843 in Wakefield as Joseph Creighton and Sarah Hepworth.

This couple married in 1839, and based on the 1851 census, it would appear Sarah was a widow when she married Joseph, as there is a step daughter Elizabeth Hepworth listed with the family.

Can anyone help with the family on the 1841 census, or any earlier parish records of the birth of Elizabeth Hepworth in about 1836- I am trying to find out what Sarah's maiden name was. Or Joseph Creighton's birth record circa 1795.

Children of this couple I have so far are:
Joseph born 1840; Ann born 1842; George born 1843; Thomas bron 1846; Mercy born 1848; Zillah born 1851 and Tamar born 1855.

The only child of Sarah's first marriage to Mr Hepworth that I am aware of is Elizabeth.

I believe Joseph Creighton was born around 1795, and Sarah unknown was born around 1813

Any help would be very welcome- George immigrated to Australia- I still have not found how or when, and it has taken me nearly a decade to track down his death to find his parents details!

Hi Kylie B,

Elizabeth was born illegitimately to Sarah; her baptism is on the IGI at www.familysearch.org.  Elizabeth is living with Thomas and Mary Burnell on the 1841 census - Mary's maiden name was Hepworth so a possible sister to your Sarah.

There are baptisms on the IGI, which seem to fit with Sarah and Mary's years of birth, parents are Christopher and Elizabeth Hepworth.  But of course to be absolutely positive, Sarah's marriage cert to Joseph Creighton would confirm her fathers name and occupation.

I have found a daughter of Joseph Creighton's first marriage (ie prior to Sarah Hepworth):

Emelia Creighton was born circa 1832 in Wakefield

She married William Nelson in Leeds in 1857 and they had at least 2 children- Harry born in 1858, and Zillah Creighton bron in 1860

Can anyone access Wakefield PR's to find her baptism please??? I would like to know who her mother/Joseph's first wife was. And then their marriage if I should be so lucky!!

Many thanks!

Thanks very much Trish

Will have to go looking for any other siblings, and of course Elizabeth's death before 1839 when Joseph re-married to Sarah Hepworth

I have looked for siblings with no luck and cant find Elizabeths death with my resources Roll Eyes It is not post 1837 that I can see so narrows it from 1831-1837.

This is a possibility for Josephs birth, remember spellings of names changed esp around this time.

Joseph CREETON
09 June 1794, All Saints , Wakefield, Yorkshire
Parents GEORGE and ANN

Siblings; on same batch 12 Grin Looks like some could have died and others named after them. Also some reg as Creighton.

You can check out batch yourself on Familysearch Wink

Marriage; as first child was born 1786 this looks good;

George CREETON
Ann PICKUP
21 August 1785, All Saints, Wakefield, Yorkshire

Cheers,

Possible birth of George CREETON 1762, which would make him 23 at marriage to Ann Pickup;

George CREETON
18 April 1762, All Saints, Wakefield
Father GEORGE

And Ann;

Nanney PICKUP
27 January 1765, All Saints, Wakefield
Father THOMAS Pickup

You can check siblings for yourself as I am lazy Grin

Using the IGi (international Gene....) find his baptism, underneath, left hand side, is the batch no. Click on it.
Another page will load
Just type in surname only and in parents box George/Ann
Click on search. results will load.
Then you can click on each one to see details

Thanks so much Trish- had no idea you could do that. Have always just used the original search page every time, and wondered why others seemed to find more than I could!!

Off to explore with my new skills!

Thanks again- very grateful to you
