Hi Monica,
Thanks for the reply and the info. I can't seem to find a marriage for David and Elizabeth though. Have searched the IGI for this marraige but nothing there. Is Saint Cyrus near Marykirk?
Hi Ev,
I had another look at that shipping record and found David's parents, well his dad at least, living at Montrose, Forfar so I thought I'd try this board as well as Kincardine. On the shipping record it has William as being born at St Cyrus, Kincardineshire, so it looks like this is my William Thanks for the Census info too but the only thing is that William is 16 months in 1841 and my William was born about 1820/21 so not sure if this is right family

I've got to shoot off as I am so late I'll look at the 1851 entries later if someone else has not done so

Hi Deb and Ev
Deb, what is the exact wording on the manifest regarding William's father David? Does it actually say father living at .... or simply show father David as being from Montrose?
The reason I ask is that the 1851 entry (which matches the entry from 1841) shows Elizabeth (Betty) as a widow:
Elisabeth Hampton 50, widow, Farmer Of 51 Acres 1 Lab, b. Fordoun, Kincardine Betty Hampton 33, b. Marykirk, Kincardine Andrew Hampton 21, Marykirk, Kincardine William Mitchell 11, grandchild b. Montrose
Address: Wood Side Hedderwick, Montrose Angus
Which fits well with that 1841 entry:
David Hampton 50, agr. Lab. Betty Hampton 50, b. Scotland Elspet Hampton 25, b. Scotland Mary Hampton 20 Helen Hampton 15 Ann Hampton 15, b. Scotland Andrew Hampton 12, b. Scotland William Hampton 16 Months
Address: Woodside Of Hedderwick, Montrose
Deb, I would imagine that the entry above with the William Hampton at 16 months may be a grandchild not your William. The 1841 census is the most limited of all the censuses. No relationships are shown within the household and ages for those over 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years. So parents above could have been born anywhere from 1787 - 91.

Is this your William before his departure in 1851:
William Hampton 30, agr. lab., b. St Cyrus, Kincardine Jean Hampton 30, b. Birse, Aberdeen Mary Hampton 5, b. Dun, Forfar Agness Hampton 3, b. Dun, Forfar
Address: Lamondfauld, Montrose
Monica
Added: Which fits with a marriage for a William Hampton and a Jane Wright on 18 AUG 1844 in Montrose.
