FRANCIS GARRATT - police constable or labourer?

Hi,

I'm trying to find details for a Francis Garratt born around 1846 Belper (possibly Shottle) Derbyshire.

I have details for him that say he was a police officer when he was married to his first wife called Sarah (I think the details are recorded at New Brampton for a baptism to his son). 

On the Heage marriages where he married Anne Smith in 1877 he is also recorded as being a police constable.

It is confusing as in the census returns he is noted as being a labourer and I cannot see anything for him being associated with the police.

Is there anyway I can find out his profession?  Or is there a site for police of derbyshire in the 1800's?

Any advice is much appreciated

Hi there

It is possible that your relative was a labourer before he was a Police Constable.

Several of my relations were labourers in Norfolk before joining the Police Service in Northumberland. I got details of their police service from the Northumberland and some from the Newcastle Archives who had their actual police records.

Hi

Francis Garratt's Derbyshire Police record is held in the Force Descriptive Register Ref D3376 OS 1/1 1857 - 1880 page 46. This register will have brief details of where he was from, if married, no. of children and previous occupation.

He first joined the force aged 25yrs 14/11/1871 but left to 'better himself' 31/02/1872.

He re-jopined the force 10/02/1874 but I'm sorry to say he was ordered to resign for being 'useless' 14/09/1877.

I hope this has been of help in your research. I do not have any other record of a Francis being in the County Police.

Hello Mike,

Wow thank you so much for replying with the information that you had found.  I had completely forgotton about this post, and had even come to the conclusion that Francis Garratt may never have been in the police, so to actually receive a reply is wonderful. 

It is great to know that he was in the police and the story has a funny ending to know that he was ordered to resign because he was useless.  This slots in perfect and I now know why he ended up being a labourer second rather than vice versa.

How do I get to see the record, I know you mention the Force Descriptive Register, it would be interesting to take a look at. 

Thank you once again for your time and in helping me figure out Francis Garratt's occupation.
