Laetitia Burton
« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 17:42 UTC (UK) »

Laetitia, the 6th child and third daughter of Thomas Burton and Laetitia Stanton was born in Pinchbeck 5th June 1859. She was brought up in the village, and appears on the 1861 and 1871 censuses. In 1881 she has vanished, and after a lengthy search with much help from Rootschat she was located as Laetitia Burdon at St. Helens IOW in domestic service with a Mrs.Conder. In 1891 she was in domestic service at a seafront hotel at Ryde IOW. Three years later she had returned in Lincolnshire, Boston, where she married my grandfather, Richard Luffman in a rather odd marriage, he was a widower in his late 60s (b1828), and she was unmarried at the age of 35. Fortunately for me they had two children between 1895 and 1899. I wonder if any rootschatter can fill me in with any information about her, especially the blank periods and why she returned to Lincolnshire, presumably to marry?

Hi Redroger

You don't think that maybe she got pregnant in service and returned home to marry a kind widower?

Lizzie, though I have that sort of mind (normally) even though my aunt was born 5 months after the marriage, the though just hadn't crossed it  this time. I had serious doubts later on when the family took in a lodger, but meeting relatives whose common ancestor was in an earlier generation confirmed the link to me, his children were spitting images for my brother's. That is a distinct possibility. Any ideas how I proceed?Had no contact with that side of the family for over 40 years.

Presumably you mean common ancestors of Richard Luffman?  Did he have any sons who might have been the father of Laetitia's children?  I know men are supposed to be able to produce children when they are older, i.e. 67 and 71 in Richard's case, but was that possible in the 1850s when men were probably not as healthy as today.

I couldn't see her on the 1891 census, where she you say she is working in an hotel in Ryde, what is the reference?

Even if Richard Luffman is not the father of her children, as she married him, she is bound to put his name down as the father.

I'm not sure what other information you are looking for.

ps.  The other question is Where was Richard Luffman in 1891?

Lizzie

Modified - Is he the one married to an Elizabeth and living in Boston with two young children a 12 year old nurse child and a 1 year old?  If so and Elizabeth died, maybe Laetitia went back to Lincolnshire to work for him as a servant and ended up marrying him.

Modified again  Richard Luffman and two sons (one born in London - interesting Huh) are also on the 1901 census.  He is a widower.  There is a death in the March quarter of 1901 of a Letty Luffman age 40 - presumably this is your Laetitia.
