problem with marriage and census -Complete
« on: Friday 03 July 09 15:02 UTC (UK) »

I am Tracing "George Chester " Born March 20 1853 and apparently died in 1933.

When living with his parents he is listed as George Chester (1861 and 1871 census) but when he leaves home he calls himself  "George Jones Chester"

I know its the same "George" because he is the informant on his fathers death cert and gives the same address as his 1881 ans 1891 census return (19 back Peel Street Rochdale)

According to the 1881 census his wife is "Mary Jane" -nee Stott  I found a reference to this marrriage in Rochdale in Q3 1878

but in the 1891,1901 and 1911  census his wife is recorded as "Eliza Jane"  and the 1911 census records the marriage has had 25 years. So it looks like he re-married.

According to the 1911 census the new wedding would have been about 1886 but my problem is i can't find any reference to the second wedding.

Further complication is that in 1891 he has a son Frank 10 years old, so who is Frank's mom?

Any help appreciated.

There is a birth for Frank Wilson Chester, Dec. 1890 Chorlton 8c 638,  in FreeBMD.
The 1878 marriage for George to Mary Stott is there too, in Rochdale.
I can't just see a further marriage.

If you write to Manchester Reg. Office for the birth cert. quoting George as the father, they will send you the cert. for £7 if the father is correct. You should then also get the mother's name!

Is Frank in the 1911 census? The entry might be of interest.

There is a 2 yr old daughter in 1891, Florence CHESTER.

This looks like her birth; the certificate should yield Eliza's maiden name:

Frank's birth should be around 1880-81, rather than 1890.

Since he doesn't appear in the Chester family in 1881, he may be a natural son of Eliza and not George, and be registered under Eliza's previous surname (previous married name or maiden name).

Brilliant!

It looks as though the Brierley family were neighbours of the Chesters in Peel Street.  Eliza J. is there as an unmarried daughter in 1881, plus one-month-old baby Frank.

1881: RG11/4110/54/8

Following on from Anna
LancashireBMD has two Frank Brierley births in 1881, one in Oldham gives mother's maiden name; the other is in the Spotland Nearer sub-district of Rochdale, so this looks the most likely.
