Completed Newcastle:childs death 1949
« on: Friday 03 July 09 16:33 UTC (UK) »

I have just recieved a death cert for a child in 1949.  He died at 418 Westgate Road Wingrove Newcastle.  This was not his home address and I believe it was a hospital.  Could anyone give me information about this place and if indeed it was a childrens hospital or sanitorium.

Can anyone please tell me how i would find any medical records for this place if indeed it is a hospital.

Thank you

Hi

It's pretty close to the Newcastle General Hospital:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/06m5/

The Children's Hospital was in Jesmond though:

Not sure about the location of the records  Undecided

Just looking through a long list of hospitals

Thanks for that.  Apparently it is the same place.  It later became the General Hospital.

Found some info on google.  But not a lot.

Institutions such as prisons, workhouses, or psychiatric hospitals had alternative addresses which were used when someone was born or died in them. 418 Westgate Road was the address of "Elswick Grange Institution" which was the workhouse, then from 1920 it was called Wingrove Hospital, and from 1930 it was Newcastle General Hospital.

As this was in 1949, it would have been the General Hospital, stan  Smiley

Ummmm - we're talking about a death in 1949. As I said, from your evidence, it would have been the General Hospital then and not the workhouse.

The National Health Service had just come into existence at that time, and in some ways, part of the General Hospital was still fulfilling the role of the Workhouse Infirmary, and still had the stigma of the workhouse.

I find your reply rather strange for someone who is usually very much concerned with facts rather than conjecture. Do you have any proof that people regarded 418 as 'the Workhouse' in 1949 after 19 years of being part of the General Hospital?

I had my tonsils out in 1949 - in a hospital that was regarded as a charity institution for the poor before the NHS was founded. The consultant and the nurses  were employed by the NHS and the building was owned by the NHS. If I hadn't gone there, I, as a 4 year old, would have had to go to a larger hospital (also a previous workhouse) 12 miles away.

I'm amazed at your comments.

Thank you both for your comments and information.  I now have more to go on and shall try to find some records which will tell me how long the child was there.  He was 2 when he died and his siblings cannot remember him ever being at home.  I feel the poor little mite may have spent all of his life in the hospital.

If by chance anyone can direct me to where i may find records i would love to hear from them.

Regards

Hi Jac  Smiley

As far as I can find out, any records would be at the Tyne and Wear Archive  which was at the bottom of   the link that I gave yesterday.

Also, see here:

http://www.institutions.org.uk/workhouses/england/nhmbd/newcastle_on_tyne_workhouse.htm

Same archives for records

or:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=1268&page=41

Poor wee mite - he was 2 years younger than me  Cry Cry Cry

If the records are in Newcastle only, let me know and I'll see if I can get to see them  Smiley

Hi Gadget,
You may think this is stupid of me but I find it very hard to navigate the Archive site.  I go round in circles.  I try to contact them but get nowhere.  I will have to phone the hospital or archives to get more information.  Thanks for the help.  I am quite new to this and it sometimes baffles me.

I  found by googling postings  on the Rootsweb Northumbria list it was not that it was regarded  as the 'workhouse' [Workhouses officially ceased to exist on 31st March 1930, but for many years the name 'workhouse' remained in everyday use]  but the stigma of the site remained, which is probably why the address was used in 1949.
