Fortuna Sequente : “Always somewhere about”
|
After years missing my grt grandmother's brother, the 1911 census has hopefully rediscovered him for me in Toxteth Park, Lancashire.
Robert Swift hd aged 43 (m. 13 yrs) dock labourer b. Halsall, Lancs Jemima Swift wf aged 33 b. North Shields, Northumberland
I find a marriage in Mar qua 1899 Tynemouth of Robert Swift to Jemima Brown
Can anyone help me locate these two in the NE in 1901?
I'm hoping I can stop banging my head now!!!
Best wishes,
Ian.

How did I miss that - my grt grandmother is in Lennox St in 1901 - silently screams - I wasn't aware at this point he had joined the navy.
In 1881 he was aged 14 and a porter in a warehouse - tried searching GRO and 1891 census and no luck with him!
1911 helped confirm he was still alive then - what you have just found confirms family connection to the same street.
The rest is a mystery!!!
Thanks for your help anyway and at least I can go home and check my 1901 copy now!!!
best wishes,
Ian.

Just googled HMS Circe - the motto made me laugh - i didn't cry!!! Not sure if this is the same one you found. H . M .S . C I R C E ( J 2 1 4 ) “ALGERINE” Class Fleet Minesweeper fitted with Turbine propulsion machinery ordered on 15th November 1940 from Harland and Wolff, Belfast. Laid down on 21st July 1941 this minesweeper was launched on 27th June 1942 as the fifth RN ship to carry this name, introduced in 1785, built at Dover and wrecked in 1803. | Last borne by a Torpedo Gunboat built at Sheerness in 1892 and sold in 1920, | it was also carried by a minesweeper hired in 1939, but transferred to the Royal Australian Navy and renamed MEDEA in 1942. and sold in 1928. Build was completed on 16th October 1942 and she had been “adopted” by the civil community of Chadderton, Lancashire after a successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign held in January 1942.

Just found this on The National Archives:
Description Name Swift, Robert Official Number: 149865 Place of Birth: Liverpool, Lancashire Date 07 February 1867 Catalogue reference ADM 188/214 Dept Records of the Admiralty, Naval Forces, Royal Marines, Coastguard, and related bodies Series Admiralty: Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services Piece 149501 - 150000 Image contains 1 document of many for this catalogue reference
place of birth is wrong but if the date is a birth date it is more likely to be the missing brother (born Halsall, Ormskirk Reg Dist, Mar qua 1867).
giddy now!!!

It must be him - just paid for it and d.o.b is 7th Feb 1867, Liverpool - I had his bapt date as April 1867, Halsall.
He must have thought he was born in Liverpool!
He is listed as a stoker, 5ft 6 n a quart inch, dark hair, grey eyes, with a fresh complexion and a scar on his nose.
States he was on the ship HMS Asia Seraphis in 1891
1901 he seems to be on the ship HMS Severn and seems to have left on 23rd July 1901 as nothing after that date (12 yrs of service)
I think that explains why I couldn't find him - so thank you for pointing me in the right direction!!!
brilliant.

Hi again
Sorry the ship he was on in 1891 was HMS Serapis
1901 it defo says "Severn" from May 1898 - July 1901
maybe he swapped ships on census night!?!
he swaps to 16 different ships in his 12 year career - maybe they missed that one out?!?
best wishes,
Ian.
