Hello Margaret
The following data are only possibilities based on searches for John R . Wallace rather than just John Wallace.
Assuming that there are no transcription errors on FreeBMD (a big assumption!), there are only 2 birth records for a John R. Wallace c1879 and this is the more likely record:
Births Jun 1878 WALLACE John Robson Newcastle T. 10b 56
However there is also a subsequent death record:
Deaths Jun 1895 Wallace John Robson 17 S. Shields 10a 412
After 1895 there do not seem to be any marriage or death records for a John Robson Wallace so it seems likely that the death record relates to the John born 1878.
Do you know if “your” John survived beyond 1901? Have you found him in 1911?
Regards
Ivan

Hello Margaret
You perhaps already have these Census details:
1901 Census 24 Agnes Street, South Shields Alice Wallace, Head, M, 44, Laundress (Own account), born South Shields Alice Wallace, Daur, S, 19, Dressmaker, born North Shields Octavius Wallace, Son, S, 15, Bricklayer, born North Shields Maud Wallace, Daur, S, 6, born South Shields Minnie Wallace, Daur, S, 3, born South Shields Leonard Wallace, Son, S, 1, born South Shields
1901 Census 28 William Street, South Shields Henry W. Wallace, M, 63, Dealer, born Gateshead
Alice appears to have been living in South Shields since at least c1895 (Maud and the other youngest children living with her were all born in South Shields) and as John Robson Wallace died in South Shields it does seem likely that he was Henry and Alice’s son.
Henry is the sole occupant of 28 William Street: had he and Alice separated for some reason?
Ivan
