Hello All
I have found that in 1839 my gg grandfather Henry Pennyfather was drowned in the Peckham Branch of the Surrey Canal. Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of the Coronor's Report or anything else that would be relative to this event.

I've just read you're message about the Peckham canal incident and I too am researching a similar event that took place in The Marshes, North Leyton, West Ham. I wondered if you had any joy in getting hold of a coronors report and how you went about it? Any information would be greatly accepted!

Sorry but as yet I haven't done anything about the canal death. What with Easter and the improvement in the weather I've not spent a lot of time on my family tree. A friend of a friend who, like you, was looking for something similar rang the local paper in the area of the death, explained what she was looking for and they very kindly searched their archives and got back to her with everything she wanted to know. Whether all papers respond like that I don't know but it may be worth trying.
I would be very interested in knowing how you get on so please let me know.

Thanks for contributing. I do have the death certificate for Henry. Why do you ask? The death was registered by the coroner. He actually died on the 26 December 1839 but the death wasn't registered until early April. The date isn't very clear but looks as if it could be the sixth.
Maybe the reason you're unable to find anything about your 1912 death is because of the 100 year privacy rule. I don't know - just an idea.

I had a couple of accidental deaths in Peckham/Camberwell to look into.
The first was in 1920, my mother's brother died after a lift accident at work at the age of 15. All I knew was the quarter in which the death was registered. I rang the South London Press, which covers that area, they confirmed they did cover Camberwell at the time of the accident. I made an appointment, went to their office and they had all the copies for that year ready for me to look through. When I found the article the lady very kindly photocopied the appropriate page for me.
The second one was my grandmother who had been killed in a road accident two days before christmas in 1944 in Peckham. This time I went to Southwark Local Studies Library, they found the films with the local papers for that period which I went through. Again when I found the correct article, they photocopied the page for me.
I think the local papers of the time were South London Press and South London Observer.

Sorry, I knew when I posted my reply there was something wrong, but couldn't find my 'post it' with newspapers on and have been looking for it since I sent my message. I've now found it and....the South London Observer didn't start up until 1874 but I have no date for South London Press. There was another paper, Illustrated Mercury of South London, but again no date. If you ring Southwark Local Studies Library, 020 7403 3507, I'm sure they'll be able to tell which titles were in print at the time, they're very helpful.

Thank you both; Sandie for the offer to get the death certificate for me and you Shirley for the info on the library. I will ring them to see if they can tell me anything.
Fancy your family living in Walliingford Shirley. I live closer to Thame than Oxford. I'm assuming you know the area which of course you may not. Another branch of my family tree (my husband's side) hail from villages close to Abingdon which is just a bit further along the river from Wallingford. It sure is a small world.
