I have been searching for the Christening of William Henry Chapman circa 1821 in Huddersfield. The only other information I have is that his father was called Charles.
I can't find either of them on the 1841 census but on the 1851 (the only census I can find him on) William who was a millwright gives his birthplace as Huddersfield.
Is there any way I could possibly trace either his Christening or his parents marriage as neither appears on the IGI?

Jill you are an angel. Thank you so much.
No I hadn't thought about looking for the nonconformist registers. This family has not only built a brickwall round it but bulletproofed it as well. LOL

Hi Margaret
Do you have a reference number for where you found him in 1851 please?
Thanks
~ Claire (who can't find him)

Hi Claire
It's 107/2218 for the 1851 and it's difficult to read.
The strange thing is I can't find him anywhere on the 1841. This is the 1861 census but there is no sign of William.
1861 census cellar under 57 Elizabeth Street, Ancoats, Manchester
Ann Chapman 32 Housekeeper Married born 'On Sea' Thomas Chapman 13 Furnace Tenter born Eccles Charles W. Chapman 11 Iron Polisher born Eccles Mary E. Chapman 6 born Manchester Ann Chapman 4 born Manchester Alice Chapman 2 born Manchester James Chapman 8 months born Manchester
On William's marriage certificate the name is spelt Chatmon. His youngest son married under the name Chapels. LOL
William was obviously educated to some degree because he signed his name when he married in 1846.
I would be grateful for any help you can give me as I am now getting to the point of giving up on this line.

Have you tried Steve Whitwam's website? He has Huddersfield marriages pre-1837. You have to register to access his databases but it is free:

But how do you actually get into the databases? I've got to a page with a list of four databases, but they don't appear to be hyperlinked and I can't see how to search them

I am the same Anna. I just emailed him and asked for a look up. It mentions that there are 9 books but doesn't say where to get them or how much they cost.

It's not the easiest to navigate! If you go to Huddersfield marriages on the front page and click on that you will come to a link to the database. Having registered, it does look as if the next page should be hyperlinked, but you have to go to the very small menu at the top towards the left, and click on what you want.
Good luck

I have had to read your message twice. I have searched for him for weeks. Tried every combination of names, ages, occupation and birth place and found nothing. Thank you so much. If I can reciprocate then you only need to ask. Honestly I am so chuffed.
