Thought I'd add to the comments as it's my Clayton family tree on Ancestry.  I saw the comment earlier on about Joseph Clayton's father possibly not being Richard Clayton.  I have the birth certificate of Joseph Clayton, born 18th January 1838 in Mansfield, and his father is most definitely named as Richard Clayton and mother is Mary Anne Clayton, nee Freeman.  I haven't been able to find him on any censuses or any mention of his death but I will keep digging.

Thanks for the welcome.  I wish I'd known about this site when I first started researching my family tree.  The progress has been slow due to not having much family information to go on.  I did find a Richard Clayton who died in Nottinghamshire in 1839 and have ordered the certificate.  I'll let you know if it's the right one.  Fingers crossed.

Just putting a note on for anyone who is interested.  I have Richard Clayton's death certificate now and he died at the very young age of 26 from heart disease in 1839.  That's why he never appeared on any censuses.  It's just a question now of figuring who the father of the other children is.  It looks like the Joseph Freeman who lived next door in the 1841 census was actually Mary Ann's father.

Thanks for the response.  It looks like I'll have to get the certificates.  I think I have the correct GRO index so it shouldn't be too painful.  I'll take it from there.  Maybe I should do the whole family - Richard might only be the father of Joseph  Shocked!!!!
