I wouldnt take it to heart! There is a web page out there somewhere, with a bishops transcript,
christening of children; father, (supposedly the butcher), and mothers occupation noted as 'whore'!!
Now, THAT, I would take exception to

In heitch's example there is not much ambiguity about the attitude of the vicar or whoever was writing up the BPs

I've come across a baptism where the (unmarried) mother was referred to as "a lewd and lascivious woman" in the parish records - not much Christian charity there! Ermy
The ribbons of her bonnet probably came undone

Ooo ... hello! ...
Scrutton, eh?
I have a sizeable bunch of Scruttons in my tree, all originating in the bit of Suffolk between Ipswich and Felixstowe, and I'm sure one or two of them were shoemakers.
I don't have this James though. Wonder who he is ...

I love "concubine"! (I found one somewhere on a census return as well.) It sounds a bit horticultural (no pun intended ) like a cross between columbine and cucumber. A fruiting flower.
Wouldn't it be great if people used this splendid word instead of the unromantic, over-used and ambiguous "partner". Is there a male equivalent?

Well, my original righteous indignation has abated somewhat, thanks to all your interesting contributions, and I do like Sloe Gin's likening of the description to flowers: "We have concubines at the bottom of our garden" springs to mind for some reason!
I've just had a quick hunt for a male equivalent but there doesn't seem to be one, although I did discover that the word comes from the Latin concumbere, to lie together.
