Froncysyllte Aqauducts, World Heritage Site
« on: Thursday 09 July 09 20:26 UTC (UK) »

As we in this lovely area between Wrexham , Llangollen and Chirk  are lucky enough to have these  two within a stones throw, I though I`d share them.  Smiley

The cross is between the two, if you ever get the chance then you should visit  and  spare a thought for the men who worked on these two structures.

Yes, the aqueducts and viaducts in the area are superb structures. I've walked over them all at some point. When walkling over the aqueducts I keep away from the handrail, i.e. the long drop side, and walk as close as I can to the water trough. This is on the basis that it is not as far to fall and I can also swim.

The Pontcysllte aqueduct is held together, believe it or not, by mortar made of lime, water and ox blood. I don't think that would be allowed today.

The Chirk tunnel is also a daunting walk, especially without a torch!.

What a wonderful accolade though ........ World Heritage Site ......... on a par with Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal etc., etc..

By the way it is Llangollen International Eisteddfod this week.

I remember running over the Pontcysyllte aquaduct from Trefor to Fron. We'd stayed after school and walked along the canal from Llangollen and realised that we would miss the bus home if we didn't run. This was in the late 1950s when it was somewhat unsafe!  The Chirk one was a regular Sunday afternoon family walk  Smiley

If it's the eisteddfod this week, I expect it will have been wet. Do they still have the folk dancing competitions on a Wednesday? Our school used  to provide the ushering and stewarding services.

Running over the "acky"?, not recommended. Walking slowly, yes.

The eisteddfod has, so far, had a good week. The schedule remains roughly pretty much as it always has, or as long as I can remember.

When we lived in the area we used to have Eisteddfod competitors staying with us for the week. We've had guests from all over the world to stay; Americans, Icelanders, Danes, Italians, etc.. Most spoke reasonable English but we used to have some fun at times.

We still have several mementos that our guests brought. We live too far away now otherwise I think we would still have them.

We nearly had to dispose of one of the Americans, a lad of around 11 years old. He walked into our house and upon seeing the cat announced he had an allergy to cats and that the cat would have to go. He soon got over it, especially when he was offered the garage as accommodation ( no, not really). But it was pointed out to him that he was a (temporary) guest and that the cat was the owner of the house.

I'm very proud to say that the lady mentioned on the link I gave is my 2nd cousin (we Roberts  Cool )  We are in touch so I knew all about the submission from 3 years ago  Smiley

I ran across the acky - no prob. Don't think I could do it now although the tow path is in a better state. When I visited last summer, it was full of canal boats. Twas not like that in my day.  Although it does  means ££s for the region, of which I approve muchly!

Tis pretty high in the sky. I think we used to dare each other to look over the railings - and they were not in a very good condition either  Undecided

PS - next year's submission is Jarrow/Monkwearmouth - another of my loves  Cheesy
