I have traced my family back to 1800 in Montgomeryshire. I am wondering if anyone can assist in a missing link. My father Charles Joseph Williams was born in 1908 in Cromwell St, Toxteth Park. He had two older sisters Nellie and Elizabeth born 1906 and 1907 and a younger brother Richard born 1910. His father died in 1915 at the age of 36 when my dad, was 8, he married my mother in 1936 and she never knew his family and he never spoke about them. I have checked orphanges. My grandfather had a number of siblings, the oldest of whom Edward lived in South Park St and was a signwriter, painter and decorator. His wife registered the death of my grandfather.
I suspect, as I cannot find a death of my dad's mother Ellen Williams nee Hughes, that she remarried. I have checked Lancashire BMD after 1916 to 1974 for a death of an Ellen Williams in Liverpool and cannot find one. I have searched that name for marriage after 1916 and there are two, one to a George Barnsley at St Mary's Kirkdale. 1916/17 the other in Toxteth Registry office I need to find out if the female was a widow at marriage. I would love to know what happened to my dad's siblings! Any advice or help appreciated.

Hi,
You say that you cannot find a death for your dads mum Ellen.......
Ellen was 31 on the 1911 census so have you ruled out the Ellen Williams death Age 31 registered Toxteth Park in March Quarter 1912 Volume 8b page 294 ?.
Regards, Mo

Hi Carol, We were always led to believe she died after her husband but maybe not, I will try it. Husband's death was registered by sister in law, which was strange. Thanks for help. I did not want to purchase all nine marriage certificates so selected the ones I thought most likely. I will certainly get the death cert. though.

If you order from the GRO you can ask them to check before they send the certificate - they do charge but it's cheaper than buying a dud certificate. Another thought is if you know which part of Liverpool she lived in you might be able to thin down the 'possibles'. As an ex-Scouser born in the 1940s I do know that Liverpool people tended to stay in either the north end or south end - the accents were even slightly different. Not a scientific approach, but that's where I'd start if I was faced with choosing between nine options. good luck!

The cheapest way is to make a list, possibly in order of what you consider priority, and check the parish registers at the Liverpool Record Office, or alternatively on film at a local LDS Centre, leaving those which are noted as "Register Office or Registrar Attended" UNLESS you are aware of whether the family were catholics, which is a possibility for the marriages listed in that way.
