South Stoneham House
« on: Tuesday 22 March 05 16:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Doing a general trawl for information on South Stoneham House.

I know it used to belong to the Sloane family, and my gggggfr rented it from Hans Sloane 1804-1809.  I have read basic details from the Victoria history.  The house is now part of Southampton University, but they do not seem to have any historical details. Similarly the Southampton archives did not have anything very illuminating.

I'm looking for any information about the house at the time mentioned, and hoping to work out what my gggggfr was doing there.  Hopefully someone has done some research?

Thanks and best wishes,

Charles

sorry link no longer working

South Stoneham House is usually attributed to the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661-1736) Sir Christopher Wren's assistant, who also designed a number of famous landmarks in his own right, for example the west towers of Westminster Abbey, and Christ Church Spitalfields in London.

The house was built in 1708 and was originally the manor house of South Stoneham. It has been altered several times over the years, although the exterior probably looks much as it did in Hawksmoor's day (if you can manage to ignore South Stoneham Tower). The most notable feature of the interior is the staircase, which probably dates from the building of the house, and is beautifully carved and decorated with scrolls, flowers and leaves.

The house was built for a Mr Dummer, and subsequently belonged to the Soane family. The grounds were said to have been landscaped by Capability Brown in 1772. By 1920, it belonged to Sir Samuel Montagu, a banker, who later became the first Lord Swaythling.

In 1922, the University purchased South Stoneham as a hall of residence for men, and South Hill for women, following an appeal for funds. Unfortunately, the purchase was made before the outcome of the appeal was known, and it fell far short of the true cost. By 1925, the University was £30,000 in debt, a huge sum in those days.

Dear Bearkat,

Many thanks for your contribution, although I have researched this quite extensively as I said, so I have seen this information.  I have also seen the frightful tower!

BTW it was not the Soane family [of British Museum fame] but the Sloanes [of Knightsbridge fame].

Still hoping for something different from somebody!

Best wishes to all.

Have you seen the entries for South Stoneham House on Access 2 Archives and Hampshire Records Offfice?  Doesn't sound as if any are of the time period you are looking at.
I have DUMMER ancestors from South Stoneham but have never been able to prove a link to this wealthy branch.

I have in fact physically searched the Hampshire Record Office but found not a great deal of useful info.  Are your Dummers right at South Stoneham?

From late 1600s BMD seem to have been at Botley but think earlier than that they were from Allington area of South Stoneham.  Info is filed away.  I'll look it out for you.

Still no details of the time period you are looking for though.  Undecided

Hans Sloane offered the house for sale in 1804. Do you know if your ancestor definitely leased it from Sloane, or could it have been from the next owner? (Or perhaps in 1804 the house and estate just never reached its reserve?)

My ancestor, John Willis Fleming, had acquired South Stoneham by 1819, and I think he may actually have possessed it earlier than that, perhaps even by 1815.

I've updated the page on our website, on the link in the previous post.

Hi Harry,

It's always nice to talk to someone whose family and mine owned the same property.

I keep a website too at http://www3.telus.net/public/chasbaz/louisbio.htm but I have decided there is so much material that it just has to be in book form so I haven't updated it for quite a while.

My chronological notes (including references to bank ledgers) say:

The Times Wednesday, Jun 13, 1804; pg. 1; Issue 6048; col A - gave the for sale ad for SSH as you know.

Nov 3  1804   Louis paid ₤9768/2/1 to Hans Sloane, so I'm sure he bought SSH, probably by lease and release, though these documents haven't come to light yet). He did advertise some oak timber for sale, which he wouldn't have been able to do unless he was the owner.

He also bought (by lease and release) 2 mills on the estate
(See:
Finding No   46M48/466
Extent   1 item
Title   Release of 2 mills called Wood Mills and a close called Horseleaze in South Stoneham, for the remainder of a term of 3 lives
Date   3 Nov 1804
Description   (i) Hans Sloane of South Stoneham, esq (ii) Louis Bazalgette of Dover Street, St George, Hanover Square, Middx, esq
COLLECTION   Harris and Bowker of Winchester, solicitors
SECTION   Clients
SubSection   Barker Mill family)

Dec 17 1804  Louis paid ₤989/11/9 to Hans Sloane Esq

May 21  1805 Louis paid ₤300 to Hans Sloane (extra property, or maybe ground rent?)

Nov 18  1807 certificate of the contract for the redemption of land tax for Louis Bazalgette, 18 Nov 1807… for lands at Millbrook.
[Finding No 11M70/B1/5/1]

Apr 22  1809 Louis paid H Sloane ₤15/15/- - perhaps ground rent)

This was his last payment to Sloane, and in any case Louis bought Eastwick Park, Great Bookham in 1809.

It is pretty certain that Louis sold SSH to John Lane, as the ledger shows:

Dec 8 1809     Louis rec’d ₤15,000 from John Lane on Newnham & Co
Dec 8  1809   Louis rec’d ₤1986/2/3 from John Lane on Newnham & Co
[PO 1808 gives John Lane, Merchant, 10 Nicholas Lane, Lombard St]

So I hope this is of interest and satisfies you (as it does me) that these transactions took place.

Best wishes,
Charles

Charles, thanks. You probably already know that Bazalgette is shown on an 1814 map -- The Road from London to Southampton, published by E Mogg.

Yes, but like directories, I'm assuming that this is a few years out of date.
I've seen another Mogg map purporting to be from 1814 that doesn't show him there.
