McAleer-Magherafelt
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 15:45 UTC (UK) »

Looking for information on my G Grandmother, Mary McAleer, b1845/1848 , i have two possible dates for her birth, father John/James McAleer, mother Sarah Devanney. She was married in the longtower church, Londonderry 1868. Details on the grave deeds of her husband in 1890, states her address as 88 Lecky Rd, Magherafelt Derry. So i don't know if she originated in Magherafelt , i do know the family where catholic, and she lived in londonderry at the time of her marrage. As any McAleers i have found seem to come from co Tyrone, I would dearly like to know which parish the McAleers lived in. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

There's certainly a Lecky Road in Londonderry (city) and Magherafelt is in County Londonderry but you've posted this under Co, Tyrone board. Unfortunately Mary McAleer was born long before the start of civil registration of births (1864) so you need to search for church records, if they exist. Have you found her in 1901 or 1911 census?- should at least show a county of birth if in Ireland then.

Hi there, the reason i posted in co Tyrone was i have been told that dependant on which parish you where born in magherafelt, the birth could have been registered in either Londonderry or co Tyrone. Not knowing the geography sure is a hindrance. Also i know she moved to Scotland sometime after her husbands death in 1890, not sure when, but if she was on the 1901 census for Londonderry, i think it might have been Creggen Rd, Rosemount, as head of household Mary Campbell, i can find no record of her in Scotland until 1923. Also her two sons married two sisters (Neely) from Creggen rd. The family folklore  is they lived quite close to each other.

Maghera (civil) Parish (which includes Magherafelt) isn't in Co. Tyrone so I'm going to move this thread to Co. Londonderry board.
Perhaps there's been some confusion between civil and religious parishes. Church of Ireland and R.C. both have civil parishes. Any idea what religion the family would have been?
