The Jurist - Google Books
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 09:16 BST (UK) »

Here I was fiddling about waiting for my wife to get ready and now she is waiting for me as I found this!

http://books.google.com/books?id=30owAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA289&dq=greaves+holmfirth&lr=

The search result says The Jurist, 1850 and it seems one of my great Uncles was in the Gaol of York.

I presume this is a debtors court and Jonathan Greaves is mentioned on both the left and right columns.

Can someone of more experience please confirm if I correct in that he is in gaol because of debt.

Thank you.

PS I also found details of Holmfirth Polling District in 1849 which I shall post separately to avoid confusion.

I have some digging in my old files and I now think the Jonathan Greaves in gaol was my Great Great Grandfather not a great uncle.

Is anyone able to confirm he was in gaol because of debt and is it in anyway possible to find out what happened?

If he is my Great Great Grandfather, he married in 1848 and in debt in 1849!

He was evidently a Licensed Victualler but I can't think for the life in me how you can get in debt selling beer!

I also "found" an ancester on the Google books site cited in The Jurist- twice!!- after some other research i found that he was in prison for debt as an undischarged bankrupt. - I found more information by searching the London Gazette site. The Gazettes report bankruptcy cases in more detail.- but to answer the question, yes, bankrupts were often gaoled in ordinary county etc gaols awaiting the hearings to appoint thier administrators.

According to The Leeds Mercury  Saturday, July 20, 1844, Messrs Brook & Freeman of Huddersfield were selling by auction a Beer House, substantial, commodious, together with brew-house, outbuildings and appurtenances called the Lisbon Tavern, Lisbon St and New Road End Leeds now in the occupation of Mr. Jonathan Greaves. The estate in Lisbon Street may be viewed by contacting the tenant, or the office of Messrs Brook & Freeman of Huddersfield, or the auctioneers in Cross bank Street, Leeds.

Another article in the Leeds mercury in 1849 mentions a Sarah Greaves Eyre who was of the Royal Hotel in Leeds, but bankrupt.

Two other articles from the same newspaper may also be of interest to you:

The Leeds Mercury  Saturday, March 2, 1833;

On Monday last, aged 64, Mrs. Greaves, wife of Mr. Jonathan Greaves, tailor and draper, St. Peter’s Square and in this town
&

The Leeds Mercury Saturday, April 25, 1835;

Free from Duty by Mr. Thomas Hardwick, at the House of Mr. Daniel Whitworth, the Golden Cock Inn, in Kirkgate in Leeds on Wednesday, the 29th April Instant at six o’clock in the evening.
Lot 1: All those six dwelling houses, with outbuildings and conveniences, situate on the West-side of St. Peter’s Square, in Leeds, and now or late in the respective Occupations of Benjamin Bradley, Jonathan Greaves, William Plowman, Widow Ryan, Jonathan Plowman and Joshua Oldfield.

Thank you, Tom, but all my Greaves are from the small villages around Holmfirth.

Rootschat did not send me an email about Sally's post yesterday and I have only just seen it while replying to Tom's.

I searched the London Gazette and it states for an appearance at the County Court of York on 17th August 1849:

Jonathan Greaves, late of New Mill near Holmfirth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Licensed Victualler, previously of Ingbirchworth, near Penistone, Yorkshire, Corn Miller and Farmer, and formerly of the same place, Corn Miller and Farmer.

It is stated in a later edition of the London Gazette that Thomas Styring was his Assignee.

It turns out it is not 'my' Jonathan Greaves at all; he just confused me by moving to a tiny, little place like New Mill!
