The Poll for a Knight of the Shire for the West Riding, 1841 and 1849
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 08:26 UTC (UK) »

I was looking for Holmfirth but details for other districts are also given

1841

http://books.google.com/books?id=Mr8HAAAAQAAJ&pg=RA1-PA283&dq=greaves+holmfirth&lr=

Does anyone know what the abbreviations Wort., Denis., Milton and Morp. refer to?

1849

http://books.google.com/books?id=30owAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA289&dq=greaves+holmfirth&lr=

I think the place after each name is where the person was born but does anyone know what the digits alongside each name refer to?

Thank you. I had forgotten this was before the introduction of the secret ballot.

I am not sure why everyone seemed to have 2 votes. I found the following on genuki but it is extremely unlikely that everyone had a home and a place of business to entitle them to 2 votes.

The 1832 Reform Act added householders of property of £10.00 (pounds) or more in annual value in towns and £10.00 (pounds) copyholders and others in counties. In 1867 the vote was extended to all householders who had been in residence for at least one year and to all lodgers paying £10.00 (pounds) a year or more (in boroughs), in counties to all occupiers of houses rated at £12.00 (pounds) or more and all householders with property of at least £4.00 (pounds) annual value. In 1884 the county franchise was brought into line with the boroughs. Even then only 59% of the adult male population could vote. Women could, of course vote if they had the relevant property qualifications. In 1918 the property qualification was abolished and all men, and women aged 30 and over were enfranchised. In 1928 women were enfranchised at age 21 and over; male and female adult franchise was achieved. Plural voting (e.g. a vote for the home and for the place of business) was abolished in 1948.

I think everyone had two votes because two people would be elected in the ballot.
