Three Cherry Trees Harpenden/St Albans
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 10:45 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

One of my ancestors is variously noted as being born in St Albans and Harpenden but on the 1891 census the place of birth is noted as Three Cherry Trees.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where this may be?

Thanks,

Steve

There's a 'Three Cherry Trees Lane' in Hemel Hempstead but I don't know if that is of any help to you.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've since found out that both the parents of the person I was looking at were born in Gustard Wood. There is a restaurant on the Lower Luton Road called The Cherry Trees, between Wheathampstead and Batford. Does anyone know if it was once a pub called The Three Cherry Trees?

Thanks,

Steve

According to Jolliffe & Jones book on Hertfordshire Inns & Public Houses -

261 Lower Luton Road.  No building on site in 1840 although the land was called The Cherry Trees.  First reference to pub 1868 when called Three Cherry Trees (it was a beerhouse and might have existed earlier but not referred to by name till then).  In 1886 called the Travellers  Friend and in 1896 The Cherry Trees.  It was still a pub in 1995.

The earlier book by W Branch Johnson gives essentially the same information.

Thank you Robert, that is very useful.

The Cherry Trees restaurant I mentioned in an earlier post is 261 Lower Luton Road. It's very close to Gustard Wood. It seems very likely that this area is the Three Cherry Trees noted in the 1891 census.

Thanks again.

Hi

I live in Harpenden and can confirm that 'The Cherry Trees' was a pub until 1995 when it became, and still is, an Indian restaurant.
