Thomas Young, Newley??? Auchtergaven
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 16:29 UTC (UK) »

I am stuck with the above relative.  I found his marraige to Ann Courage which says he is from Newley (as was Ann's family).  Ann was born 1788 so I reckon Thomas somewhere around the same.  They had 4 children and ended up in Bankfoot.  I reckon Thomas died between 1830 (last child born) and 1841 (census).  Problem - can't find Newley on IGI (or anywhere else) and am therefore stuck trying to find who Thomas' parents were.  Is there some way I can find MI's, although I don't think he is in Bankfoot as I didn't come across him there.

Any pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi SL

Done a bit digging on IGI and came across Thomas Young, christened 22 July 1786 at Auchtergaven, Perth.
Father. William Young.
There is also another entry with same details but christened 22 July 1787.
Looking for siblings I found John Young, christened 30 Jan 1785 and William Young, ch 16 Sept 1792 at Auchtergaven, Perth
Father.William Young
Mother.Christian Dun
Possibility this may be your Thomas Young.

Newley can be found on www.old-maps.co.uk. Enter Auchtergaven, Perthshire in search box then select 1st of two results. When map is displayed enlarge and look for Bankfoot in large letters. To the north east of this you will see New Lea which appears to be a small group of buildings. This is most likely Newley with alternate spelling.

Bankfoot was actually formerly called Auchtergaven.
There is a graveyard at Auchtergaven and Perth Council may be able to assist with burial records. They can be contacted on enquiries@pkc.gov.uk
Finally from the website www.caledonianconnections.com there are details of the 1832 Electoral Roll from Auchtergaven. One of the entries has a Thomas Young, mason, proprietor of lands, houses and other subjects living at village of Bankfoot. May or may not be connected.

Regards

Thank you Dex for all that information.  Now that you point out the New Lea solution it makes so much sense!  I will certainly followup the Thomas you suggested (now that I know he lived in Bankfoot rather than further afield).  He was down as a slater so very well could have been in the building trade.

Thanks again
