XP update has altered website settings - help!
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 12:40 UTC (UK) »

About a week ago there was an update for our xp pc. Since then some websites run as they did and others don't.

My BT Yahoo e-mails page comes up in a weird format and there is a bar to click at the top where I can tell it to display blocked content then the sign in page appeears as normal and works fine.

My fiancee can't get a website for a game to work - it says the security isn't up to date when I know it is.

But (more importantly  Smiley) I can't search the 1911 census. It says cookies aren't enabled - I have followed their instructions and added the website to the allowed list but still I can't search.

Feeling puzzled and annoyed - any ideas anybody? I have looked under every internet safety/security option I can think of.  We have IE 8 as the browser.

Hazel

I know some websites have compatability issues with IE8.

If you go to Tools, Compatability View Settings you can add the websites you are having problems with to the compatability view.

Hope this helps

Thanks Dinie - tried it but it doesnt help unfortunately.

It is saying for both of our e-mail accounts that the websites (hotmail and bt yahoo) have invalid security certificates.

You could try removing the update. Start: Control Panel: Add or Remove Programs: Show Updates. Find the last update for XP and remove it, then see if that helps.

I tried doing that but the update I know must have come within the 10 days to a week isn't there - the latest one is a few weeks ago.  Huh

how about using the System Restore Feature - back to a date when you know all was working ?

What about IE8, how long has that been the default Browser ?

IE8 has been the default browser for a while now.

Does the system restore feature delete files that have been created since the date you restore it to? Does it delete software that has been installed lately? Also, where do you find it?

Thank you for the ideas everybody.

System restore only deals with system-related files, not application software.

It restores the system to the selected restore point date, so related files created since will be gone.

Click on MY COMPUTER, then SYSTEM PROPERTIES - select RESTORE Tab.

Incidentally IE8, has a 'compatibility' feature setting - makes it 'respect' sites that worked OK with previous versions of IE.

So far using firefox as a browser seems to be working.  Smiley But might do a system restore if necessary.

I guess it must be a problem that's linked to IE 8 but only one that has appeared lately as it had been working fine since we installed it a while back.

Uninstall IE8

http://blogs.technet.com/fixit4me/archive/2009/03/18/uninstall-internet-explorer-8-fix-it-live.aspx

it works, I've done it, but beware, MS will keep telling you to install IE8 as a very important update. You have to change your update settings to allow you to choose your updates when they become available otherwise MS will automatically update IE7 again.

Far better to get to the root of the problem, which is probably an incorrect privacy or security setting.  Reverting to IE7 will only delay the inevitable, because sooner or later MS will stop supporting IE7.  Since IE8 originally did not have a problem, then it has to be something that has changed in the program settings.

At the moment we are using firefox. Oddly enough some of the websites including 1911 work fine on firefox but my e-mail log in page still comes up all wrong. At the moment every website works for us even if  the odd one looks wrong.
