SANDERS/SAUNDERS and STEPHENS in Portsea
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 12:57 UTC (UK) »

My 3rd Gr-Grandmother was Margaretta Evans SAUNDERS (married Thomas Bolton CUMMINGS) and I have been unable to trace where and when her parents were born.  I believe they were John SA(U)NDERS and Susanna/Susannah STEPHENS who married 4 Apr 1804 in St Mary's, Portsea.  They had (at least) 8 children, including my Margaretta.
Does anyone have access to records that might include any information about either one of them?
Is there anyone else researching this family who might like to share information?

Thanks

Hi Karen,

Welcome to RootsChat.  Smiley

John was apparently a widower when he married Susanna in 1804. He appears to have died pre 1841.  This makes identifying him a wee bit more difficult since one cannot be certain that he was born in Hampshire.  Susanna may still be alive in 1841: if so she was not born in Hampshire.

I have found Margaretta's baptism - the idenitification of the parents seems reasonable - trouble is both Sanders and Stephens are wide open to variant spellings.

Any other clues at all?

Thanks, Nell.  I do have information from the 1841 census entry for Susanna(h).  Don't know if the surname was spelled Sanders or Saunders but I doubt it would matter, would it!:

HO107-0414, Image No. 236, Folio 4/50, Page 19, Entry 5
She was a widow (aged 60)  living on Marie Lee Borne Street, Portsmouth, Portsea with daughters Charlotte (aged 20) and Sarah (aged 15).  She was born out of county.

I have always wondered if Susanna(h)'s mother's maiden name was Evans given that Margaretta's middle name was Evans, but that was never enough of a clue to find Susanna(h)'s birth.  Margaretta in various forms carried down to my mother whose middle name was Marguerita.  We heard there was Spanish blood but never could prove that.

Thanks, again, for your help.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Karen

Since this is John's second marriage, it seems fair to think of him as older than Susanna(h).  There are two possible burials:
15 Jan 1829 age 75 in Alverstoke
11 Jan 1830 age 75 in Portsea.

Neither has any other clue to help.  Sad

The closest baptism I can find is one in Fareham, for a John Sanders son of Thomas & Rebecca on 6 Aug 1769.  Unless he came from the Isle of Wight.

Only suggestions.  Sad

I've seen the John Sanders of Fareham and thought him a good posibility - Oh, but to prove it!  If he was "my" John then the burials in 1829 and 1830 at aged 75 would not be him.

Just looking back at your previous post, I'm wondering where you found information that led you to believe that John was apparently a widower when he married Susannah?

Do you know if full parish registers are available for St Mary's Portsea?  Wouldn't fathers be named in the parish registers?  (I think I might be looking for a good excuse to find my way down to Hamps, although it wouldn't be any time soon, unfortunately!!!)

Hi Karen,

Parents' / fathers' names are not recorded in parish register marriage entries prior to 1 July 1837 when civil registration began, so not much hope of finding a father's name in 1804  Undecided

I found John recorded as a widower in the transcription of the entry that I found.

Full parish registers for St Mary's Portsea can be viewed on fiche/film at Winchester, Portsmouth and SoG in London.  You could also view the film at an LDS Family History Centre if pre-ordered (for a small fee).  But these centres seem to be suffering staffing problems at the moment.
