Dowloading to PDF !!
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 14:26 BST (UK) »

Hi Guys......

I do hope that some body can help me with this very frustrating problem .

I have created some lovely trees, and I am now at a stage where I want to download and have them printed........

I am using Family Tree Maker 2006 . the tree template I want to use is the All in One tree. We have downloaded it to a Cd Rom, but that can't be opened at the printers.

Last week, I purchased the 2009 update, and I was told that I could upload a tree on 2006, with no problem. I have done this. There is a problem ! It has uploaded the tree I want to have printed, and all the info, but the tree template (extended family tree ) is not as nice as the All in One. However, despite being told that it could be downloaded on to a shareable disc, my printers still can't open it.

With me so far ?

Can sombody please tell me, very SIMPLY,how to upload/download, my original All in One tree from Family Tree Maker 2006 to a PDF.....and then what do I do with it ?

I wanted to give this as a gift, but have now missed the birthday (today)

I am sure that I could have just sent the CD to a professional family tree printer, but it is SO expensive, when my very good local printer will do it at a very reasonable rate.

Help Please

Regards

I dont know if this will work with 2006..but i use it with 2009..

http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/BullZip_PDF_Printer/BullZip-PDF-Printer.html

when you want to print..

open the tree you want..
create report (which ever one you want)..
click on print..
find the bulldog printer..

and follow the options from there..

and its free Smiley

Jeannie

Are you able to view the .pdf file on your computer?

I have FTM-2005 and I just tried to create a file.

1) I went to the top of the tree in family view and clicked on Charts >> All-in-One Tree.
2) Once it was displayed to screen I selected File >> Export All-in-One Tree >> To Acrobat (PDF) ...
3) I then supplied a file name e.g. mysurname.pdf
It then asks Export this view to:
a) One large page
b) Multiple pages

I selected One large page.

It saved the chart and I used My Computer to navigate to the place where it was saved.

I use Foxit instead of Adobe Acrobat and it opened it without any problems.

It opens it at very small magnification which I enlaged until it was the same size as it was displayed in FTM.

Th problem with saving trees to PDF using FTM is that FTM will not save a tree any larger than 54 inches, if the tree is larger than this size FTM will reduce it to 54 inches on one page, it does this by shrinking the tree so the fonts end up smaller and it may well be unreadable when printed, what's the physical size of the tree you want printing  Huh?

High Street printers cannot print directly from an FTM file like we can. Tell me the size and I'll see what price we can print it for..

Hi Again

Thank you, so much for you imput.

Downside, we have managed with your step by step instructions,to upload/download a vertical pedigree chart , from FTM 2009,to PDF , as a learning curve, and hopefully, we have emailed it to the printers. Will know tomorrow if we have succeeded......Watch this space. Thank You.

Woody I have managed to download Bullzip, but not tried any thing as yet. Was brain dead by 11pm last night .......We ar going to have another go today

Genealogy Printers, I think I met you at York Family history Fair last week.

The Tree I want to down load is approx 44inches in length. I have just printed it out, 6 pages of A4.
This is a FTM 2006 , all in one tree. When I try to make it into a PDF, I keep getting the message that it is inexecutable ? as you can tell, I am not very technical , and do not know what this means ! I think I may have the format incorrect. Portait instead of landscape ?

I  had intended to build a couple of family trees for gifts, now that I am retired. I spend hours and hours doing the research, and the tree building, a labour of love really. Putting the tree together with double sided tape is tedious and not very rewarding as a gift

When it comes to my own tree ! I think it stands at about 96 pages and 400 people. May have to downsize it for printing, I think....but still researching.

Kind Regards

If the tree is 44 inches wide it should not be a problem to create a one page PDF that can be printed by your local printer, however, FTM uses a default font size of point 6 when you design a tree, I hope you made that font size larger, we use size 8 bold for names and 8 normal for the rest of the events, 6 is small but readable.

The all in one tree that FTM makes is a mess, we are beta testers for FTM and we have been harping on about this for over 10 years but they have still not made it possible to alter the layout of the all in one tree, we use other software for all in ones and all our all in one trees go from left to right and are wider than they are tall, most FTM all in one's are taller than they are wide.

We were at the York fair, on the ground floor by the cafe, 96 A4 pages for 400 people is a lot of pages, we can probably get it smaller on one sheet without affecting readability.

Ron....

Thank You so much for your information, it is really helpful. I am aware that when it comes to the point when I want to get my own lineage on a chart, I will have to have it done professionally, and i will have to exclude quite a few people, but when I research, I tend to 'do' everybody in the family view......

I have been able to print out descendents trees, with no problems, other than joining larger ones together, which is very frustrating. But it was when I wanted to do complete family tree for my friend, that the problem arose. . As I said, it looked lovely, as I had arranged it, coloured it, lovely text, info etc, on FTM 2006. Bought the 2009 update tranferred it to extended family tree, and I don't like it at all. I have printed out on paper, joined it, and thrown it away, as it seems to have split families up, and it doesn't make any sense....

I am not too worried about my friends tree, she has no idea about it, but I have spent 7 months researching my son in laws family, and want to give it as a gift for his 50th later in the year. I do want that to be perfect. I want to include as may ancestors , and living family members as I can.

I have to get it all checked re:the living members , but once I have got the all clear, and know that it is correct, I will get in touch , for a quote. I have your details.

I have retired recently, and was hoping that, doing a couple of trees for friends as gifts, may give me the oppurtunity to get a couple of commisions, where I could make a little bit of money, out of something I enjoy, and I know that I am good at....The research any way !!

If that happens, I will need a proper printer.

Kind Regards
