Hi, soulsister,
Unfortunately you can't download a volume control on it's own - it will come as part of xp or part of a music player application.
Go to Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Devices.
There is a checkbox halfway down for "place volume control in taskbar". Make sure this is ticked.
This should give you a volume control. Shout if you have any more problems.

Hi
You don't say what type the laptop is. Mine is an HP d/5094EA. It has a row of funny little metal buttons along the top of the keyboard - one of these turns the sound down, one mutes the sound and one turns the sound up. Reading your query I wondered if somebody has muted the sound.
All the best

Thank you for all your help on this! I am back home now but will be using the other laptop again soon enough! I shall try all suggestions and see if I can get the audio back on. It does have system noises like the beeps etc but when playing music etc in the browser there is no audio whatsoever. Also, no vloume icon appears in the taskbar.
Thank you again for all replies!

Hi
I looked at Tony's link and noticed that Fn + F5 is the increase volume control. It may work if you press this key combination a few times. If it is beeping Fn + F3 has not been used to mute it. What are the rectangles, shown in an illustration at the top right of the keyboard? Are they just lights or do they work as push buttons and do they do anything with the volume?
Good luck
