Hello Jackie At the moment I have not got a copy of the marriage certificate, hoping for reply from Melbourne soon. I, like I suspect you, think that she could have been illegitimate, possibly with father Pitt and mother Walker or possibly she was born Elizabeth Pitt and her mother married again after her father died. There is a "possible" Pitt/Walker marriage in 1840 I think, at least the 2 surnames are together on the same GRO vol & page no. Haven't so far found them on immigrants to Victoria.
From what I have from the Victoria registry there is no mention of the Pitt name at the wedding. The Pitt-Walker name only appears on another web site, submitted by a descendant.
regards Eric

The registers for Welland don't appear on the IGI.
Yes they do
Have a look at Hugh Wallis' IGI Batch Nos., searchable by individual parish http://www.rootschat.com/links/06tb/
Have had a quick look at Welland can't see baptism for Elizabeth under Pitt or Walker
1841 census details (for anyone else searching)
HO107/1204 book 2 folio 4 page 2 Bushley Green, Bushley
Wm. Walker 60 Sawyer Y Susannah Walker 60 - Y

Hi Keziah Sorry, don't know how I missed Welland ---advancing years. I see there is another marriage between a William Walker and a Susannah Best in Bushley 1838, which is presumably the couple in the 1841 census, and so not the ones I am looking for. Have ordered marriage cert for the William Walker marriage to possibly Susannah Pitt in 1840, in the Upton on Severn district, so will have to wait and see. I didn't find this couple in the 1841 census, but would like to know if they were around in 1851.

Hello Eric
Good that you now have the marriage certificate, but no further forward
Have had a look for Henry Pitt in 1841 without success, what occupation was he given on the certificate?
The two deaths can probably rule out, certainly the first one! - From the burial index, the Susannah Walker who died in 1840 was aged 77, buried 17th July; the other was aged 55 buried Great Malvern 6th September 1843.
It looks like Elizabeth Miriam Pitt/Walker was born before the marriage, as you suspected.

Hello Keziah I think we are some way further forward, although no sign of Elizabeth Mirriam Walker yet. As no one seemed to be able to find her in the parish records or censuses, there was some suggestion that she had been a little "economical "with the truth when it came to her marriage cert. But she said her father was a carpenter named William Walker and her mother was Susan Pitt, whose father was Henry Pitt. The marriage cert for William and Susannah substantiates this.
I have been in touch with a lady in Canada who put a request on this board last year for a marriage look up in Upton on Severn who was looking for a husband for her Susannah Pitt, whose father was Henry Pitt, and she has given me details of the Pitt family, who roamed from Leicestershire to Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Henry Pitt was a shop keeper. He died in 1837 I think it was in Herefordshire . This afternoon I have found William and Susannah Walker in the 1841 census. They were living in Tewkesbury (HO107 380 5 5), but there is no child with them. So perhaps if Elizabeth Mirriam was being economical with the truth it was more to do with her age. Did she make herself older than she really was to get to Australia and to get married? ?
I'll keep digging!!! regards Eric
