Heworth Lane near Gateshead-Births
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 18:18 UTC (UK) »

Hi, apologies if I've already posted this request for info on this site.

Looking for any information on birth/baptism records for Heworth Lane, Gateshead.   My relatives Bartholomew (GGF) and James Cunningham are on the 1861 census as living and being born in Heworth Lane, Durham.  I cannot find either of them on the civil registration.  Can anyone help?  Details are:

Peter Cunningham (transcribed Conningham) 35 Head Chemical Worker born Ireland
Rosa 30 born Ireland
Mary daur 11 born Scotland
Bartholomew son 5 born Hewarth Lane, Durham
James son 8 months born Durham.

The parents married in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire and had Mary, but they don't seem to have registered her in Scotland or England by the look of it.

As the census moves on over the years when Batty moves to the Widnes area of Lancashire, his place of birth becomes a bit more unclear, Newcastle 'Staffordshire' not! and Felton 'Cumberland' not!

Is there anyone who knows the area well and could give me a clue on churches in the area around the time and where any baptism could have taken place?  Batty's son, born Bartholomew Dal(e)y in 1892 in Widnes was definitely RC.

Look forward to hearing from anyone who can give me specifics or general info.

Birth Registration of James Cunningham

Sep/1860
Gateshead
10a512

Possibly yours but you'll need the Birth Certificate to verify it

No sign of Bartholomew under any variation of the surname

Heworth Lane was part of the village of Heworth, just to the east of Felling and now part of Gateshead.  High Heworth Lane and Low Heworth Lane still exist.  Possibly divisions of the 1861 Heworth Lane after the building of the road to Sunderland

The nearest RC church at that time was probably St. Patrick's at Felling Shore.  It moved to Felling High Street near the end of the 19th century

Hi John

Thanks so much for that info.  Don't suppose you know if any of St Patrick's baptism records are online or where I would go to get sight of baptism records? This is my first endeavour out of Lancashire records so a little unsure.

Hi Paula

I'm not aware of any RC records online for Felling

You could try writing to St. Patrick's RC Church, High Street, Felling, NE10 9LT.  The original records are probably kept there.

Alternatively, try Gateshead Central Library, Prince Consort Road, Gateshead, NE8 4LN (tel no 0191 433 8400).  St. Patrick's isn't listed amongst their holdings but neither is St. Joseph's RC Church, Gateshead, but the microfilms are there

 Paula,

Chatter Terry Arthur has transcriptions of St Patrick's RC, Felling,  church records. I am sure he will respond soon on your Cunninghams.

John, thanks for the tip on James' birth.  I hope I've done the 'quote' bit correctly.  My first time.

I've received James' certificate and he is definitely the correct person.  Still no sign of Bartholomew though.  His mum changes her name all the time.  One minute she is Rosanna, then Rose then Rosa and I think Anna too!  At least I have her surname, Murphy, so I can try and find in Ireland.  Mmm, should be timeconsuming.

I've had fun looking at online maps of the area of Heworth Lane and can still see where it was.

Haven't progressed any further on contacting/visiting Gateshead Library but will need to do that.

If anyone is in touch with Terry Arthur, I'd be grateful if you could let him know about this thread.

Thanks, Paula

Thanks Jennifer.  Wasn't sure how appropriate that was.  Cheers, Paula
