My great, great grandfather, Edward Butler, was born in Cheltenham in 1855 as far as I can determine. He married Emma Geal in Reigate, Surrey in 1880. He was employed there as a Coachman/Groom.
I haven't been able to find any information about Edward's parents. At least, there are possible candidates in Newent but none of them appear to be a suitable match.
Any help to establish who Edward's parents were would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Gumshoe

Have you sent for Edward and Emma Marriage certificate
Sept qtr 1880 Reigate 2a 257
This should give his father's name which should help you find him say on 1861 Census this should also give you his Mother's name, from there you may find his parents marriage.

Many thanks for your helpful response to my request. A special thanks to Arranroots for a lead I never expected (what was your source?). Also a special thanks to ChasH for the pointers.
Much appreciated.

Hi. The date is a bit wrong but - IGI has two entries for the marvellously named:
Edward Swinburne Ward BUTLER for 1859
One entry states he was christened in Bristol in 30 June 1859 The other New Hampton Surrey. (Your reference to Surrey made me wonder...)
Father: Charles Edward Butler Mother: Frances Guadalupe Felipa Maria Ward
You'll find her on IGI - they married in Paris in 1855
Given the mother's names (IGI indicates she was Mexican, again, you'll find her birth on IGI - it also explains where 'Swinburne' came from........)
Back to Edward - I wonder whether he was baptised twice?
May not be your family - wish it was mine - sounds fascinating!
By the by, unless you have proof via certificate, don't be too hung up on Cheltenham as his birthplace - my grt grandfather was always thought to have been born in Cheltenham - turned out to be village of Tredington GLS.
This family in 1881:

Hi again
I should think that Edward's marriage certificate would be the best place to start - it sounds as though you already have it, or info from it, but you don't tell us much about the detail?
The father's name, occupation and residence of Edward would help you to tell whether the info I posted yesterday is likely to be correct. I realise also that what I posted is the same birth as Hepburn but for some reason that was dismissed - maybe I missed something?
Kind regards, Arranroots
p.s. usual sources but some mis-indexing was at play!

Hi Again,
I don't have Edward's marriage certificate but I will send for it sooner rather than later. I've gleaned most of what I know from the census returns and Edward and his daughter, Eleanor, were both witnesses at the marriage of my great grandfather, William Benjamin Butler (I do have that certificate).
I don't actually get much time to dedicate to my research so I thought I'd enlist a bit of help in the few spare moments I have.
Thanks once again.
Gumshoe
