Elsie Violet Mitchell's first child, Ivy, was born in 1904 at Dairsie, (near Cupar), Fife, and lived with her grandmother, Eliza, until Eliza's death circa 1920.  According to Ivy's daughter, (my cousin), her mother had told her that she had never met her grandfather, James Mitchell.  In 1915 Elsie married a widower, John Elder, at Eliza's house in Cupar.  On the record of the marriage both of her husband's parents were listed as "deceased".  Elsie's father, James Mitchell, was not so listed.  A great grandson of James & Eliza's oldest son, James, has sent me a copy of James's marriage record which took place in Rutherglen, near Glasgow, on 31 December 1895.  James's age is recorded as 27.  His parents are recorded as  "James Mitchell, ploughman & Eliza Mitchell (maiden surname Green)".  It may be that James Mitchell did not qualify for his Master Gunner- Pensioner status until he reached a certain age.  While in the army he spent some time in India.  I do not know if Eliza was with him but she had Indian furniture and ornaments in her house in Cupar.  I am aware of a very good reason as to why they may have separated.  My cousin who I referred to above, can remember around 1940 going with her mother to Pontefract to see her mother's Uncle Johnny (Mitchell).  He had two sons who were bus drivers.

Although I am aware of a reason as to why they may have separated, I don't wish to disclose it.   It is only a possiblity and  in no way impacts on the family history line.
