Hello all
Really didn't know where to post this query - so apologies if this is the wrong place. Received a death cert for my grandmother's brother which stated that the cause of death was 'Syncope - lasting six days' can someone please explain what this was in layman's terms?

It's bouts of unconsciousness or partial consciousness, caused by a poor blood supply to the brain.

Not always fatal, would depend on how long the person was unconscious, it can cause a fatal heart attack, which might have been the case if your grandmother's brother was unconscious for 6 days.

Another reason to keep my BP under control.
Seriously, I appreciate your replys - I wonder why it happened in a young man. I assume he was unconscious as the death cert said 'lasting 6 days'.
I was wondering whether it had anything to do with epilepsy, as my grandmother was the first known sufferer in the family - and someone seems to have it in every generation since, all female.

Normally syncope is caused by low blood pressure, but can be the result of the body trying to reduce a very high blood pressure, which might be what happened in your husband's case Barb.
Jan - Syncope hasn't anything to do with epilepsy, although in the past and I suppose sometimes today, people with syncope are sometimes misdiagnosed with epilepsy. Nowadays, after various tests, epilepsy can be ruled out.

Often syncope can mean a whole range of things, usually meaning to faint away and mostly explained by blood pressure or heart problems. Modern certificates wouldn't get away with it as a cause of death without more explanation, as it is more of a mode of death, in the same way they often put "exhaustion" to explain that someone had been ill for a while.

Jan, we now know of a sydrome called Brugada syndrome. It is an anomalie of the conduction system of the heart. Sudden death is the usual presentation, but, if his heart somehow started up again, he could have been left with brain damage, hence it taking him 6 days to die. It is an hereditary thing, and is often the cause of sudden death in young people. Nowadays, the family is referred to a clinic specialising in genetics. All the family members are tested. Of course, this wasn't possible in "days of yore". was this a one-off death of a young person?
Syncope is a diagnosis of anything which causes loss of consciousness,as others have said. Today, a person who passes out would have a barrage of tests, blood tests,blood pressure, ECG, CT brain scan, EEG to determine the cause.

Interestingly, I've recently received the death certificate of one of my great grandmothers. Her death was given as being from Phthisis Pulmonalis Syncope"
Now I knew that the first two words meant she had TB or "consumption" but I had no idea what the syncope meant.

I agree, Chinakay, VF is usually not salvagable unless someone does CPR. But I have seen a patient recover when a Doctor thumped him on the chest (which used to be the first thing we were told to do if a patient was pulseless/in VF). We didn't have a defib close by at the time, so he took the odds to it!
I've since been thinking about it further, and I believe that this ancestor probably had ventricular tachycardia (VT). We now do electrophysiological studies in the cardiac cath lab to see if we can reproduce the arrhythmia, in which case the patient gets an implantable defibrillator. In the past, people just dropped dead. we've had quite a few patients in our cath lab who've had car accidents, or who've collapsed, been found in a bad way, and they've had this condition.
I'm really glad to be living in this era!
