crying horse memorial
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 04:10 UTC (UK) »

hello, does anyone know if a statue of a crying horse on a grave is popular amongst travellers.ive been researching an ancester called william george spain,a horse dealer, and recently found his grave.the memorial is about six feet tall and consists af a plinth which stands about four foot, and on it a statue of a horse about two feet tall with its head bowed and tears coming from its eyes.theres a poem on it which reads:when in my health,i little thought, the time was come so near, that i should leave all earthly friends, that were to me so dear.be warned then,by my sudden call, for death you must prepare.the time will come, you know not when, the manner how or where.then today i was in margate cemetry looking for ancestors connected to william, and came across the memorial of john sanger of the famous circus family.his memorial is very similar, although it stands a good eleven foot, with the horse statue being about five foot.on it is written the same verse.im wondering whether this memorial and verse, and particularly both together, are well known amongst horse dealers and travellers.if so,theres nothing unusual about this, but if not,im wondering if it points to a connection between him and the sangers.i know he did have professional/family traveller connections.ive recently discovered his daughter married a horse dealer called albert grey, and his grandfathers second wife was the widow of charles hambleton,a travelling showman.any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks, nel.

I, and many other have written articles and drawn up family tree for the Sangers and there are no family connection to the SPAIN family.
I do know many Circus families had horses on their memorials. Not all as large as Sangers of course. There is another Circus family who married inot the Sangers who have a horse for a memorial in Sussex.

susanna, thanks for that.im thinking he might have known them in a professional capacity, what with them being equestrians and him dealing in horses.if this memorial with that specific verse on it is not widely used, then he must have been aware of it as he wasnt buried in thanet.it was erected by his daughter who married a welsh horse dealer whose grandfather married the widow of a travelling showman,so there could be a link there.im just waiting for a couple of marriage certs to hopefully learn more about them.clearly no tree or research can be completly exhaustive and there were a lot of spains, some like william pursuing pretty unconventional lives. so who knows, regards, nel.
