John Longstaff
« on: Monday 06 July 09 14:05 UTC (UK) »

I have been looking for a long time for John Longstaff born circa 1822 in Auckland St Andrews, Durham. It now appears the family may have been Methodist. Any ideas where I can find Methodist records for this area.

Hi Lindamm

There is a comprehensive list of pedigrees for the Longstaff and its variations mainly in the north of england at this link  http://homepage.ntlworld.com/carole.johnson40/PEDIGREES.htm . I myself am descended from the Barnard Castle pedigree. There is an entry in non conformist BMDs for a John Longstaff in 1823 Durham at this link (hopefully) http://www.rootschat.com/links/06my/

Good morning.
I have some knowledge of Langstaff/Longstaff family from Bishop Auckland including John Longstaff bpt 1810 Auckland St Andrew.
Family went to New York 1840.s but came on to Australia 1853.
Pedigrees referred to in earlier posting are excellant resource.

Hi Thank you for your help. I have looked at Carole Johnson many times and still cannot find a connection to this John Longstaff. I tried your other link but unfortunately it wasn't him. This ancestor is becoming very elusive. Wink

Good morning Lazarus,Thankyou for the information. This John definately didn't go to either America or Australia but his son george did for a while. I tried the other links but still cannot find him. I have managed to trace him back to 1851 but the trail goes cold from there. His marriage certificate states his father is a George who is a shoemaker but cannot find this connection either. I thought he may be methodist because John and his wife baptised their many children in the mehtodist religion.Thank sLinda

Hello Lindamm
I suppose you noticed that there is a whole pedigree devoted to Cordwainers (shoe makers).
It was Pedigree 9 but I think the number has now changed. This would be worth checking again
"Langstaffe of Bishop Auckland' "The Cordwainers".
Have you any idea who your John married?
When I have some spare moments I will check out the Bishops Transcripts which I am able to access,up to 1851.

Hi

Thank you for the info. John married Ann moor in 1860. She came from Dalton on Tees. They went on to live in Willington and have 8 children. I have John as a lodger in Willington in 1851. All the cenus returns say he was born in Southchurch which I have been told was Auckland St Andrews.

I will try the pedigrees again. I think sometimes you look at things so much that you miss the obvious.

Thank you again for your help

Hello Gary. There are a few baptisms for Longstaff at the catholic church, Barnard Castle.
I think the name has been well covered but here is a snippet that is interesting.

Elizabeth Rutter, born 20/October/1861, baptised 17/November/1861. Parents John and Frances Rutter, maiden name Sowerby. Sponsors Jonathan and Mary Rutter.( and the part that may be of interest to you.)
"This is the first baptism in a font gifted by Lucy and Emma Longstaff"

Hi Adam
Thanks for that its something else to Tree. The Longstaff generosity gene must have rubbed off on me  Grin. This post prompted me to do something I have been meaning to do for many years, and was to visit St Andrews. I photographed all the available gravestones and am in the process of transcribing them. I found one of my lot and boy did it make the trip worthwhile, the information on a gravestone can be like a lottery win.

Hi Adam

Thanks for the link can't find St Andrews though. Ouch @ £5.50 for a transcription. I am more than happy to let anyone have a copy of the actual gravestone if I have one.

Hello Gary. That £5.50 is for all the inscriptions for the  graveyard.
I think that is a reasonable price.
Just go to publications page on that site and then gravestone inscriptions.

I Found the page  Grin. £5.50 is indeed very reasonable for all the transcriptions.
