finding my 4xggrandmother's death
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 12:07 UTC (UK) »

My 4x great-grandmother Elizabeth Bowes was born about 1768 in Scalby. In 1841 she's living with her husband in Scarborough. In 1851 the couple are living as paupers in Falsgrave.  In 1861, a widow aged 93, she's living with her married daughter in East Sand (?) Gate in Scarborough.

Presumably Elizabeth must have died in the few years following this census, but the only death I can find in Scarborough for Elizabeth Bowes is in 1860.

Can anyone find a possible death please? As far as I can see the family stayed in North Yorkshire all their lives.

All suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.
Lesley

There's a Betsy Bowes DecQ1863 Scarbro 9d p230 It might be that whoever registered her death knew her as Betsy but Scarborough Register Office should check it for you.

Thanks angelfish - why didn't I think of that?Huh I tried a few variations on Bowes (tried to imagine it in a broad accent like my nan had) but just assumed Elizabeth would be no problem.

I am VERY grateful. I know she died fairly soon after 1861 in Scarborough so this looks very promising. I'm sending for the certificate today.

Still kicking myself for not thinking of variations on Elizabeth - and very grateful that you did. Will report back in a week if the certificate is my ggg.
