Ephraim was possibly married previously

IGI which is free to search at www.familysearch.org

EPHRAIM ROBSON    Spouse:  ELISABETH KEITH
Marriage:  02 FEB 1813   North Leith, Midlothian

EPHRAIM ROBSON  Spouse:  MARY INGRAM

If you follow the instructions below - the baptisms of the 3 children you mention can be found

Hi Carole,

Thank you kindly. I have had little success with Ephraim and Mary's life in Scotland, all I know is that they both came from the Northumberland area and Mary had a sister named Jane.

Regards,
John.

This is also from the IGI

EPHRAIM ROBSON  Christening:  13 NOV 1785   Morpeth, Northumberland   Father:  JOHN ROBSON   Mother:  MARY

If Mary was a similar age to Ephraim - this is a possibility

MARY INGRAM   Christening:  05 JAN 1783   Horton By Blyth, Northumberland   Father:  JOHN INGRAM  Mother:  ISABEL

I cannot find Ephraim in Scotland in 1841

Hi Carole,

Ephraim died in 1824 from an asthma attack.
In 1832 Mary was arrested and charged for stealing money. She was sentenced to 14 yrs. In 1833 she was transported to Australia along with her 3 children.
Mary and a few other ladies were running a house of ill repute in lothian. They apparently stole money off a client who was drunk. Mary made the big mistake of sending her 10 yr old daughter to the local  store with a 10 pound note to buy more whiskey. The owner, of course became suspicious that a 10 yr old with that amount  of money would have had to stole it.
I have her history from the above details, it is prior to that I am seeking. I have done some research in the Durham and Northumberland areas. The name Robsons is worst than looking for a Smith, even Ingrams.

Is there or was there a place in Scotland or maybe Northern England named Newbattle. In the documents I have of Marys court case there is a mention of a sister Jane  from what looks like Newbattle (writing not to clear).
Regards,
John.

The National Archives of Scotland have details of her precognition for the crime of theft. The summary states she wasaged 45, living/working in Constable's Close, Coalhill, Leith, but was born near Newbattle. It would appear she had a previous conviction for theft, unfortunately no records of this obviously in the NAS.

ref     AD14/32/334 and JC26/1832/208

Coalhill still exists on the waterfront next to the bridge that forms part of Sandport Place although some of the buildings have been redeveloped, there is still a row of arches behind the frontage of the shops which are much older. Google maps streetview is useful for looking at this.

Hi Kristy,

Thank you for your reply.
I have the documents in full (78 pages) from the time she was arrested right through to her sentencing.
Information I received from a rellie some years ago has Mary born in South Shields, Durham. This is why I am seeking further Info on her, as the document states she was born near Newbattle, whether it means near Newcastle!!!!

Regards,
John.
