1851 Census Kent, Deptford St paul's
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 20:36 UTC (UK) »

I am having problems making out the text on an 1851 census. Particularly the ages which is key for me as the ages in the previous census (1841) for the same family is rounded up or down.

The scan I have was available on ancestry.co.uk, however it was either a bad scan or a damaged document and I was unable to make out most of the text.

I can't find the scan on genesreunited or findmypast.com. I was wondering does anyone have any other access to the scans for this area in 1851.

Should anyone be able to assist me with this just to let you know that the reference on the scan is HO 107 1584 with the number 56 in the top centre and 82 in the top right hand corner, the house/schedule number in the far left column looks to be 149.

The names of the family are

George Hubble Head
Sarah Hubble  Wife
Sarah Hubble  Daughter

Any help is greatly appreciated

Regards Rob

Hi Hubble and welcome to Rootschat.  Smiley

I'm afraid the 1851 census isn't on FindMyPast yet. Sad

I'm sure other Rootschatters will have a go at working out their ages.

Hi,

I think the ages are 57, 54 and 22, respectively. But it is very faint and I'd like someone else's opinion.

Ah, Ricky - you beat me but at least we agree.

Firstly thank you so much for the speedy replies.

Secondly.

I do believe the original scan has probably faded so regardless of the source I think the text will be faint.

The thing is the original may be better quality because the scan is so faint that you really can't make out the names so whoever transcribed it was able to manage to read all the names. The surname is actually written once. I believe it is the right scan having stared it many times I believe I can make out enough to verify it is the same family.

eg: George Hubble  Head
       Sarah      do      Wife
          do         do     Daur

Thirdly.
Interestingly enough through the LDS site I was given an indication that Sarah was originally a Chapman (not confirmed by me I am somewhat still a beginner) I see bearkat that you have Chapmans from Kent listed as a name of interest to you.

Chapman is a fairly common name in Kent - mine came from the Staplehurst area of Kent.

i did have a little go but with so many to choose from I wanted to wait a bit.

I need to learn more and ask more.

I know Kent would have been quite rural at the time but what with the name being popular it was a bit overwhelming..

With other names I am following I have had more luck but that has been the Dalley name in Worcestershire and herefordshire

On 1841 census it says no on whether born in county or not.

Deptford was partly split over Kent and Surrey with that part being part of the brixton hundred within East Surrey.

In the 1851 census it says Lewisham

I don't think the baptisms for St Mary, Lewisham are on the IGI.  Undecided
