Isn't Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire Wales?

Have you checked the 1861/71 Welsh census or just the English one

If that 1861 entry is correct - then Mary Ann Berry was actually Mary Ann Williams

Marriages December qtr 1858

David Joseph Berry  Haverfordwest  11a 1107

Hi Carole

If he was a seaman in 1861 perhaps he retired from the sea and became a sail maker  Cheesy or is that what you were saying? David J Berry - J for Joseph?

I can't see any more that fit at the moment.

Hi

I think it's probably the right 1861 as it's the only possible fit.  I suspect she took her stepfathers surname but why Joseph on her marriage cert if he was David?

many thanks to everyone for this,i think youve probably cracked it  between you.on the 1881/91,when mary anns married to charles hambleton, shes given one daughter a very unusual name, staicha or startha, this sounds very similar to the sisters name.if she was only married for a few years it might not be easy to discover who she married before david, as williams is a prolific welsh name.it would be nice to know her birth name.welsh research is a headache, nel.

I doubt she was married before marrying David.  I think Mary Ann was illegitimate.  If she was the legitimate child of a previous marriage - she would not have married under the surname Berry - she would have married under her birth surname

I suspect David treated her as his own child

There doesn't seem to be a Mary Ann Berry's birth registered in Pembrokeshire around 1856. So it it probably that she was registered as Mary Ann Williams. Unfortunately there are 3 or 4 that were born in Haverfordwest at that time!

I wonder if David was her biological father and that's why she married under the name of Berry.  I presume as she was over 21 she wouldn't have had to show her birth certificate as proof of age? Perhaps she didn't know she wasn't a Berry!

I think you have hit the nail on the head there.  She was only about 1yr old when Elizabeth & David married and only 5 when David Berry died so it was probably easier to let her think she was his child
